Lock and tracker

HI,

I'm new to this game.. was looking for a low cost - lock/tracker for my bike.

I was eying up the oxford monster lock.

This is for when i'm out and about - rather than at home.

No idea on a tracker as I don't have one.

For the lock, is it this one?

If so it gets reasonable reviews on Sportsbikeshop. The 1.5m version weighs 6.44kg according to an answer on there so it's still a fairly big old thing to lug about so you'll probably need a bag to put it in. I guess like most chains it won't be fully non crop/grinderable but the ones that are most resistant tend to be bloody huge and no transportable.

Check your local bicycle shops, amazon etc for this On-Guard 8001 Brute STD-8001 Keyed Shackle Lock. Its a bargain considering the levels of security it offers. When my bike was stolen they couldn't crop this and had to use an angle grinder. That will have more hope of attracting attention than a quick bolt crop of your lock.

Looking on SBS I notice that I use the disc lock that comes with this chain when out and about. Luckily I don't leave my bike anywhere dodgy normally though and thankfully it's not been attacked yet. This version of Oxford lock was one Zanx said was actually a bit tricky to get through as oppose to the other old type opened with a biro.

It had quite good reviews. I'm not really sure what is best, I need something to deter - and offer a little protection

These are a simple low cost tracker option.
Less than £40 per year for the SIM card.
There’s no connection to the bike battery so no worries about flat battery.

It does use the mobile phone network so can be beaten if the bike is hidden away from coverage or shielded.
There’s no on board alarm, it only calls your phone to let you know the bike has been moved, and then tracks it via the app.

I find its good for peace of mind, knowing that if I can’t see my bike when out it will let me know it’s been touched, and at home again an extra layer of reassurance.

Isn't the problem with his reviews that he picks the locks whereas 99.9% of UK tea leaves just angle grind or crop em?

He does both in some cases, i.e. the one I recommended.

The OnGuard is for bicycles, so its a very tight fit on motorbike wheels, which adds to its security value for the reasons you mention. Bargain too!

Just ordered the Monkimoto tracker. I'm impressed by the battery independence and life of its inbuilt batteries.

They'll stop someone wheeling a bike away... but minus a ground anchor, four blokes and two scaffolding poles later, and it's in the back of a truck.

With cheap trackers, check what 'G' band they run on and whether they might be in danger of being turned off.
