Possibly A Stupid Question
In my camperbus there is only two seats when driving. Driver and the wifes seat. As it was a bus we just used seat out the back for her as it had an integrated seat belt but she is finding it uncomfortable and it does not adjust. I could easily make a seat base and use a car seat but i have nowhere to mount a seat belt. The frame holding the sides and roof on is all alloy and her seat is right next to a support upright beam, So Possibly Stupid Question time. Can i use 3cm box alloy as a belt support? Unsure if its strong enough.

They wont see it TBH as its behind trim what is between two windows. Only other option is lap belt or the type you see in rally cars wth the middle clasp what both options she hates. The floor is wooden so even a integrated belt is not ideal. The seat had four floor mount bolts but only two go through a chassis mounted spreader plate.

Its the rear two but the wooden floor is the main reason i want a better belt option. The belt clasp will be floor mounted rather than seat as that can easily be fixed through the main Chassis rail. The over the shoulder side mount is what is worrying me. My local MOT Garage owner is its MOT man and lives in the next street. It'd say it's more important how you attach the belt rather than worrying about it being 'only' 3cm cross section box aluminium. You could pick the entire van up with a bit of 3cm box section with way thinner walls than you'd think. The bulk strength of the section isn't at issue really (probably - assuming it's not tinfoil thin).

I wanted to just drill through two opposite sides of the box section and mount the belt there. Im Blue in this picture is roughly where the seat is and red lines is roughly how the alloy frame sits. Both sides of the door and back end of rear window is steel uprights what i presume is stiffer incase you roll the bus. Behind the seat between slopping and middle window you will see a white dot. This is roughly where the belt will be pulled down from. I was thinking just drill through the alloy from the outside and cap the ugly bolt with a plastic cap. This will be the top mounting point and the lower will have to be on the same strip of alloy at floor level.

Get a Mercedes Viano seat, the seatbelt is integrated into the actual item.

Is it worth contacting the coachbuilders who, errr, built the coach? They should know what's strong enough as the force generated in high speed impacts can be huge.

Is the wagon still registered as a bus, if so then a seat belt is not reqd, so fit what you like to keep swmbo happy, then remove it for the test.

Previous owner made a shit attempt to get it registered as a camper. Sofa bed, Chest of drawers and a camping stove Came back as PLG what is a shame as the tax for bus is almost 100 quid cheaper. I will be going for camper after i refit and paint it and as her seat is technically not a front seat she does not need a belt but we would rather have one. I have an idea of adding a steel frame what will work i just need to fathom if the chassis outriggers are strong enough.

If it had stayed as a bus, you'd need a PCV mot which is ministry only and no latitude, and, from memory of my old LDV, fucking expensive.
