Hope Say Their Super Short 155 mm Cranks Are 'The Sweet Spot'

Post by weeksy »

Last year we covered the surprisingly strong scientific evidence that, despite popular opinion, shorter crank arms don't compromise a rider's power output or pedalling efficiency, and in fact, may offer certain biomechanical advantages when compared to typical 170 or 175 mm cranks.

After making shorter cranks for e-bikes, Hope Technology have been experimenting with crank lengths over the last year with staff and athletes, going as short as 140 mm. They say that 155 mm is "the sweet spot" for mountain biking. As a result, a 155 mm version of their Evo crank is now available to buy.

Hope Say the shorter cranks offer the following advantages:

• "Body weight remains more centred on the bike increasing stability and making it easier to shift your body weight around."

• "Quicker to 'spin up' which can help when transitioning from descending to sudden steep uphill features." (This claim is supported by this study).

• "More ground clearance for reduced pedal strikes."

• "Lighter and stiffer due to shorter length."

Other than the length, the specs remain the same as Hope's other Evo cranks. They use 30 mm diameter axles with axle lengths to suit most bikes from XC, DH, SuperBoost and Fat bikes.

Because shorter cranks reduce the overall leverage between the pedal and the tyre, requiring a faster cadence, Hope recommend dropping your chainring size by 2 teeth for every 10mm reduction in crank length. So, if you'd normally run a 34-tooth chainring with a 175 mm crank, you'd want a 30 -tooth ring with a 155 mm crank. Hope make chainrings as small as 28-tooth. Note this will also increase ground clearance when the cranks are level.

The Evo 155 is in stock at dealers now.

I have gone from 175 cranks to 165 on two of my bikes

The good:
Less pedals strikes
The bad:
Just about everything else

155s will be just awful

Think my brother went to 180 cranks on his roadbike with tri bars and he thought that was a clear improvement.

Had to go down from 32 to 30 tooth chain ring
Means you are spinning more - I'm a spinner so that okay.
But it means you do run out of gears when coming down

It feels odd ( the Privateer has 170s on , and that seems absolutely fine)
Climbing hills just seems to be way more of an effort - so much so that I now have a 11-51 cassette on the back - even with the 30 tooth chain ring. It is like they have made me even more useless up hills!

I can see why the work on eebs. You don't have to make any effort ...

Bike fit James says don’t go short! 155 will be sub optimal if you’re not a slight build.

Bike Fit James isn't trying to sell you the latest run of the CNC machine ....
It makes sense that crank size goes with body size ( like wheel size really).
I think 165 mm is too short for me - 175 was always fine - until low bottom brackets became a thing ...

I agree, but you'd assume Hope have done a fair bit of testing on this

Yes, if there was a reason to sell specialist small cranks to London golfists, I'm sure BFJ would find an excuse 🤣

Brother is definitely not a spinner, one of the blokes who rode with him always just calls him a "Big Numb Cunt" and as he had a good deal of the local strava KOM's he must have been doing something right.
He's not a hillclimber though.

The hope test riders are probably athletes, I've seen most of them riding round our way and as a recreational rider I'm not in the same ball park.

If they had tested on people like me and their findings were the same then fair enough, I'd buy in

People who go down hills quickly have no comprehension of how much falling off at that speed hurts. I do :hmmm:
