Fingers crossed for Gino 💪🏻

Gino Rea is in a critical condition with reported head, chest and lung injuries after crashing during practice for the Suzuka 8 Hours

UPDATE 22.00 UK with quote from FCC TSR team manager

“Rea received initial treatment at the track before being transported to hospital by helicopter,” a statement posted around 8.30am UK time read.

An update on the rider’s condition will follow when more information becomes available.”

The FCC TSR Honda rider was involved in an accident during Free Practice 2 after crashing at the Triangle Chicane. While little information about his condition has been communicated, it is known he was unconscious when airlifted to hospital, while subsequent multiple reports say he is in a critical condition with head, chest and lung injuries.

However, an article posted by the Kyodo News Agency on its English site reports Rea's Honda 'slammed into the wall' during the accident, adding 'spectators and race staff were not injured'. According to sources, Rea has undergone surgery for his injuries but this remains unverified until an official communication from Honda or the FIM/EWC.

Gino Rea’s family has issued a statement on the Honda rider’s condition following a free practice accident at the 2022 Suzuka Eight-Hours.

“We couldn’t make a post earlier,” it reads. “This is due to the Japanese culture as they do not release any news to media without the direct contact with the family first.

“We arrived in Japan on the 8th of August at 8 pm with many thanks to the EWC, FIM, Suzuka Circuit, British Consulate and TSR racing team for all the help in arranging emergency Visas for us.

“At 2.30pm we had the opportunity to see Gino so we now have confirmation from the doctor about his condition.

“Gino was admitted to the intensive care unit on Saturday 6th August following an accident in Free Practice 2. He was concussed and sustained serious head injuries, he also has injuries to his left clavicle. He is still under sedation to reduce swelling on his brain and to control his temperature, he is due for another CT scan on Wednesday for a re-evaluation of his condition.

“Thank you for the excellent work from the Suzuka Medics, Helicopter Crew and the Hospital staff.

“Gino is very strong minded, lives life to the full and gives 100 per cent to any situation. With him being so fit and healthy it will help him to a ‘Speedy-G’ recovery.

“Thanks for all the support and messages. We will keep you updated as soon as we have any new information.”

He has always been a really popular bloke in the paddock and immensely talented but just never reached the top of the categories he raced in on the world stage. His endurance racing was going well and in a top team.

Gino was around the paddock as a kid when I was involved with Bemsee and always smiling land laughing. Positive news so far and hopefully this will continue in the coming days and weeks

Update from family today is that Gino is getting there and is now in a stable condition rather than critical. When his sedation was reduced from the induced coma to reduce brain swelling he opened his eyes and squeezed hands under direction.

Little steps but positive ones

Good luck to Gino, He's never had the best of machinery, but has made the most of what he has had and looked like he was enjoying himself at the same time.
