My sister had the last small frame Vespa (like this one) sold in the UK, it was actually quite fun to ride, the gear change was interesting.

Was it squeeze and twist? Used to be a nightmare on a Lambretta, 2 gear cables that frequently snapped at the cylindrical nipple. As did the throttle cable. I finished one journey with the throttle cable tied to my ankle and moving my foot backwards and forwards to de/accelerate.

Time to come clean: as a Vespa GTS300HPE (and Honda CBR650R) owner, I quite like this. Good to see a scoot up for comment on RTTL. Not sure I have the wardrobe or style to ride it though.

Yes, same as a Lambretta, it had 3 gears and you could go from 3rd to 1st if you wanted to, it was brand new (in 1983 on an A reg) so it never gave any problems, nice reliable little bike, I think it was premix, she had a 125 afterwards that was a bigger frame and was shit to ride.

Quite like that.
Also I like the way that the Ewan and Charlie wanabees need averything from the Touratech catalogue to go to the local One Stop shop and the scooter boys have a parka jacket and a rolled up sleeping bag and they're off to Brighton from Glasgow.

My sister went from Ipswich to Morecambe and back on her 125 on L plates, so no motorways, probably in 1985.

A friend of hers went from Ipswich to the Greek Islands on a Vespa 200 in around 1986, nearly froze to death in Yugoslavia on the way back, sadly he died a few years ago in his mid 40s.

I went from England to Germany via Luxembourg and back on a GS (with pillion) with nothing from Touratech, no luggage apart from a toothbrush and a change of underwear (each) in a tank bag.

What do I win? A fishtail parka?

I went to the South of France on knackered CB900F with a rattly cam chain that broke on the way back, fortunately I only had my wallet and the clothes I stood up in so it was no hard ship to dump the poor old Honda in France, this was 1986, I was 19 and stupidly confident that everything would work out alright.

My BSA A7 ended up being abandoned somewhere near Abingdon in similar circumstances. It was a relief. :D
