Italjet Dragster re-commissioning

As my 350LC is just about finished ( or at least any more progress is stalled for the time being waiting for the tank..) and the summer is upon us, I thought it was high time that I got the Dragster running and on the road again- I know this will probably be of zero interest to some /maybe most on here , as well, it’s a scooter innit and not everyone on here is comfortable enough with their sexuality to admit they like them ;) , but I’m guessing it’s a bike that quite a few won’t be familiar with, and most of us like these sorts of threads with lots of pics so I thought why not do a little thread on it- I'm reasonably sure all the other cool-kids (we know who we are eh Tiepin 8-) ) will look at it even if no-one else does :D

So, a bit of history on this one- I bought it back in 2010-ish, when it was just about 10 years old, it was 100% original and unmolested with a grand total of 800km on the clock, and had spent the vast majority of its life indoors.

I bought it back then as I think they are pretty little things, not that common and isn’t going to reduce in value, in this condition, anyway, and I love 2-strokes and riding most twist-and-go scoots too.

Image

The things that differentiate it from the majority of other bikes are of course the single-sided front-end and suspension, and trellis frame.
As scooters go, it’s definitely not the most practical ( you’d get an open-face helmet under the seat but not a full face) , but it does also have a nice little lockable compartment for your stash

Image

or of course, the original toolkit, which mine has 8-)

Image

It’s one of my “keepers”, not the fastest thing in the world but accelerates fast enough to zip past most traffic and it gets to 120 kmph on the speedo easily- it has small-ish ( 11” front and 13” rear) but for something with such small wheels, it handles pretty well IMO and has decent brakes, and most people expect it to be a moped and lot slower than it is so it can be quite good fun.
There is quite a big following for them , there are loads of upgrade bits available for both engine and chassis, and they are also very tunable – back at the time my plans included a 180cc Malossi kit ( mine is the 125cc version although they were available as 125 and 180 from new), bigger carb, expansion chamber, and higher final drive gearing,.
I’ve got a whopper Dell-Orto carb and reed valve manifold for it somewhere, but that’s never made it out of the box so I need to find it, and who knows – 95% of Dragsters I’ve seen have been turned into fast, but horrendously chavved-up things - a big part of the appeal of it for me is its originality, so I’d always been of the mind that changes I do make, if any, will have to be completely reversible.

Pretty much as soon as I got it I adapted an old ZX6 ( I think) sidestand to fit, as they don’t come with one as standard , and it looks so much cooler just flicking it out as you jump off rather than lifting it onto the centrestand :-) ) , and just used it for fun little local runs to the shops in my shorts and flip-flops for a few years.

Image

Along with adding a sidestand, I did make a few other small changes to it in the first year or two that I had it, all cosmetic, as I thought they made it look nicer, and they were to replace the chromed plastic top-yoke/instrument surround and handlebar switches (also chromed! ) with black ones, replace the silver brake levers with black to complete the look, and lose the massive standard stalk mirrors with a small single bar-end unit.

Image

The last time it was used was 2014-5 -ish , then just I parked it up in the garage, sort of forgot about it and didn’t go near it for a couple of years, but foolishly I’d inadvertently left it with ethonal content fuel in it which of course completely smegged up the carb.
I of course only found this out when I went to start it a couple of years after that, and back then I whipped the carb off, took it to bits gave it a run through my ultrasonic bath, but it still didn’t run right, and it made me wonder whether it may in fact be crank seals gone hard from standing and leaking, but that was as far as I got back then as other stuff took over and it’s just been sitting in a corner for the last 6 or 7 years

So jobs to do for starters are:
  • See if the (currently flat and possibly sulphated) battery can be revived- replace if not.
  • Sort the brakes- the lever on both now comes right back to the bar, so air has got in, which I am guessing means seals, but the calipers and master cylinders will get an inspection, and if no obvious leaks we’ll try bleeding and see where we go from there.
  • Put some fuel in it (it’s currently completely empty deliberately) , see if it runs and how it runs.
Once I’ve got it running, I’ll assess things- I’m hoping that the poor running of a few years ago is just carb related rather than crank seals- my memory is a little hazy but as I remember it would run sort of OK on choke, but as soon as that went off (it’s one of the bi-metalic automatic ones on the standard carb)it wouldn’t run at all low down and if you did manage to keep it going would just race away like it had an air-leak.
Whatever it is, it’ll get sorted, then I’ll MOT and tax it , see how I feel about it after I’ve ridden it again before I potentially launch into any performance upgrades.

To be continued....

Have you seen the new one?

It's not going to be as much fun being a 4 banger, but it looks mental!

 Nice

Saw one that wasn’t in as good nick as yours locally, up for around 4.5k recently.

They're great little things.
Try soaking the carb in either carb cleaner or petrol and then blow it all through with an airline.
It's usually the pilot jet and it's air bleed that get blocked by the dreaded green gunge.

You've got me looking at Gilera Runner 180s now  Always fancied one of them.

Just seen the prices :o

Love it Tricky, Always fancied one of those or a Gilera Runner.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. A tuned 180 would be lots of fun.

I've always had a mild itch for a scoot, I think i'm more likely to get a TMax as a commuter than anything else..

That looks to be in fab condition, very nice. I had a Peugeot Speedake in the nineties, not quick like a Dragster but fun all the same.

I had an SH300i for a good few years,so I'm well comfortable being seen as a part time batty boi.

That's a mad looking thing,a bit like GheyPan's crossdresser scoot with it's kit off.

Anyway, you have far too many bikes Tricky. :P

Yup, I almost bought the 200 when they were announced- if it had a smoker engine I wouldn't have hesitated, still might get one one day as yeah, I think they look really cool too

This ain't my first rodeo, as the saying goes so I know, but cheers and yep, it'll get a more thorough going through this time, - I have everything crossed it is just carb related and not crank seals

Doubt if it will be crank seals, my YPVS hadn't run for over 20 years and the crank seals were fine.

Very nice, I had a 100cc Speedfight 2 Prost edition instead what when I was first learning, that had a weird single sided front end too.

I'm liking the look of the new ones, not the price though

That reminds me- it's all been quiet on your YPVS project recently, or maybe I've missed some updates- what state is it in now, and how's it coming on?

Don't forget, we've got a forum run-what-you-brung 350LC drag-off to sort once yours is running

Not fair - Power Valves should be handicapped as they're faster... :D

LC is quite a bit lighter, with a bit of tuning an LC can be just as fast as a YPVS, but not as smooth, I knew a few people who thought the best combo was YPVS engine in an LC

The difference really is the midrange. The YPVS system really does fill in the 'hole' below the power band and (from memory) makes launching them off the line noticeably easier. There is a weight penalty for the YPVS I agree. If I was building a hybrid I'd definitely go YPVS motor in an LC frame.

We'll operate a handicap system- you get an extra 0.5 sec :D ;)

A little bit of an update on the dragster- I topped the battery up (it's a whopping great YB10L on these, feck knows why other than it fits neatly in the space) with getting on for half a bottle of de-ionized water and the Optimate brought it back to life after 24hrs or so.
It seems to be holding a charge so all good there, and after giving all the pipes and clips/clamps a once over, taking the plug out and dripping a little bit of Motul's finest down there, I just went for it and tipped a bit of fuel in, turned it over a few times on the kicker with the ignition off and throttle open and she fired up on the button instantly.

It was very very rich and smoky for the first minute or two whilst the choke was on but within that picking up OK - as soon as it heated up a bit and the auto-choke went off however, it was shite.
It would tick-over and if you could manage to nurse it past the bit above tickover then it would rev out OK, but most of the time would die getting it there- the good news though was that the revs weren't racing away like I seem to remember they were a number of years ago, so I'm reasonably confident this is just carb problems, so the spanners came out and this is how it currently looks

Image

I started stripping the carb down ready for the ultrasonic bath, and the penny almost immediately dropped- these have a "tamper-proof "sealed pilot mixture adjustment screw, and that remained untouched from new - somehow when I previously bathed the carb I'd missed that, feck knows how, but I am 99.99% sure there will have been a blockage in that air bleed passage, and sure enough, although the rest of the carb and jets etc were still nice and clean from their last bath, when I'd managed to extract the (headless) screw, it looked pretty yucky down there, so it got a blow through with the airline and an hour in the bath, which has brought it back to how it should be.
I did briefly think about buying a new proper adjustable brass pilot screw as the Dell-Orto importers are the sames ones still that I remember from 30+ years ago , are only down in Reading and hold good stocks, but have decided for the moment I'll save myself a tenner and just try things with what I've got, so I got the hacksaw out and put a slot in the top of it.

Image

While I was at it, I had the tank off as the vaccum-operated fuel tap is permanently "on", so I was pretty sure that and the tank would also have suffered from leaving that fuel in it all those years ago, and I wasn't wrong- this is the tap and the exit hole in the tank where the tap sits....

Image

Image

New taps are available and pennies relatively speaking, so that one is going in the bin and a new one is winging it's way to me now along with new pipes to replace the now very brittle current ones, and I'm off down to Tescos later for some white vinegar to sort the tank, and when the tap arrives I'll nail it back together and we'll hopefully have a runner.

Along the way I've also managed to find the little stash of bits I accumulated some years back for it, and in amongst that the big-boy carb and manifold ( pictured below with standard for reference 8-) ) so assuming she runs as expected when I get it back together with the standard carb, once it's MOTd and I've run it around a bit, I think an anti-social ped-boi spannie and some different weight rollers etc will definitely have to be sourced for a little bit of dyno experimentation along with the big carb, as it would be rude not to eh :D
