8k 2 up tourer ???

Post by Dodgy69 »

Possible interest shown from wife about touring trip on bike for next year. My mates in Spain with his wife and gs and last night she said maybe if we went abroad. Jeez, never shown any interest before so I've jumped on it.

Now, I'm thinking z1000sx or Tracer. Anyone got experience of z1000sx with pillion. There's a few nice ones for well under 8k. Anything else worth considering, non GS of course.

Cheers. 🙂👍

Japanese? 1 litre+? Touring with wife+shoes?

Only 7.5k miles. :D

(Sorry, last Japanese bike I had was a CX500 so I've no idea really. :D ).

I had the same dilemma, at one point my money was on a Honda Cross Tourer, not the lightest or fastest, but comfortable and roomy (I'm quite tall).

In the end I bought a GS LC, after years of being very anti-GS. Yeah the build quality isn't Honda, but it's got every toy you can think of, goes pretty well (125bhp) and is comfortable for the wife and me over long distances.

If you're thinking of a Z1000SX also look at the Versys, they're not pretty, but they are pretty much just a more comfortable version of the SX.

My mate had a very nice looking 2016 z1000sx, chopped it in against a 2015 tracer.
Far happier with the Yamaha than the kwack.

I like Tracers but not sure how the rear shock would cope, if stock. Trying to avoid the adventure bike, purely coz of the piss taking out of my mate over the last few years, but probably a sensible direction.

Nothing from Honda as usual taking my interest, so mainly thinking Kawasaki, Yam or Suzuki . We will see. 👍

Suzuki made a faired GSXS 1000 prior to the new GT (which is lovely) but it is somewhat challenged in the looks dept I think

The VFR1200 has got to be better than the VFR800, it's 400 more for a start!

Tracer is a bit wee and nesh didn’t like mine. Z1000SX if the tour was one up.

For that budget I’d go for versys 1000, always liked mine and regretted selling it for the S1000XR. Versys was a better comfier road bike.

My mate liked his, but they are a heavy bugger though. DCT is a nice touch for touring as well.

As mentioned about cheap French bikes, there are several low mileage fj12s over here for about a grand now. You cant beat a FJ for 2 up mile munching!

Sooooo.....when you say 'touring' what do you have in mind? As per other threads you can tour on just about anything but are you covering big miles every day? Autoroutes? Gnarly French back roads? How much gear are you carrying? Hotels/camping? How much of a faff do you want loading the bike each time? Will you be parking the bike up unattended with it loaded up? How secure is your stuff? Where will you leave the helmets? etc etc etc.

What you want to do will/should lead you towards a bike that will do it rather than pick a bike then try and make it all work.

Personally I'd start with what secure luggage options are available on a large-ish, comfortable, go-anywhere sort of bike that'll cope happily with autoroute (if I absolutely must :( ) If ADVs are out, that leaves full dress tourers with 'proper' luggage rather than a half-sports thing with a Givi and saddlebags. One single, decent distance trip across Europe might need wet weather gear and hot weather gear - for two. It's all got to fit somewhere. :D

Can't imaging that pillion seat's much fun.

And isn't anyone concerned about soaring fuel costs for a tourer?

Oh, and they used to be a local bike shop... pretty awful reputation.
