Honda CL360
Now this, I really like...

Little Brother seems to be showing a flicker of interest. I notice it has the front drum rather than the disc that didn't work in the rain. Most of the engine is made of chocolate, of course, but if you're only doing a few hundred miles a year it should last a decade or two yet.

Re: Honda CL360
I've looked at them before, always plenty on UK Ebay, some fresh off the boat from California and needing work.
I think the CL450 has the more reliable engine, same as the Black Bomber iirc and they're not much more money.

When you say 'reliable', compared to a Swiss watch or a grenade?KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 8:15 am I think the CL450 has the more reliable engine, same as the Black Bomber iirc and they're not much more money.
Having worked on the 500 engine, copiously, I would never want to own anything 70s Honda again!

Re: Honda CL360
Didn't the 450 have those weird butterfly valve springs that were prone to snapping?

I reckon a grenade discharges it's duty far more reliably, repeatably* and cheaply than a swiss watch.

Re: Honda CL360
A workmate and myself used to own one of these as a commuter/Winter bike. It had a nice torquey power delivery and as a Winter hack a lot more pleasant to ride than our usual fare of 'end of life' 125s. It was generally reliable, considering it had no love in it's previous years. A burnt out valve and CV carb rubbers were the only things I recall. Easy to work on.
I'll readily admit to a Honda aversion in general, but I think this old bus looks well now.

I beleive the technical term is torsion bar springs. The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 8:29 am Didn't the 450 have those weird butterfly valve springs that were prone to snapping?
They also had a centrifugal oil filter, which chucked solid lumps of debris up into the oil galleries and would block the hollow cam feed and run the follower out!
Or the dodgy gear dogs, or the longest cam chain ever made!

That's a bit techy and complicated, but even I can tell that it ain't goodDemannu wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 8:36 pmI beleive the technical term is torsion bar springs. The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 8:29 am Didn't the 450 have those weird butterfly valve springs that were prone to snapping?

Re: Honda CL360
Dunno about the 360, but there was definitely a CB900 custom with high and low ratios, giving 10 gears, feck knows why, you'd want it to go as fast as possible so nobody saw you on the ugly fecker.
