After a few years use I've decided that my CatEye Stealth Evo is a royal PITA and a POS! Never have I had so much aggro uploading to Strava now.

After a new unit that uses GPS and is also ANT+ compatible for my cadence and HRM sensors, uploads seamlessly to Strava and a nice-to-have would be a routing function too. Don't really want to break the bank either.....

I know that I can strap my phone on to the bars and get most of that functionality but rather my expensive phone is somewhere a little safer....

I’ve got a garmin edge explore it’s been great for 3 years or so. Has all you ask for but I’ve just checked the price and it’s £180. I’d still buy another if needed but it used to be a lot cheaper lol

Another Garmin user here, my Garmin Edge (800 I think) is coming up for 11 tears old and still going strong and it interfaces with my new polar heart rate belt.

I've a Garmin 810 edge which is great, my daughter has just bought a 530 and its pretty good for the price.

Garmin are bringing out a new range of 'plus' models that you may want to look at.

From my experience of a good many years, you can't beat Garmin.

Or buy a cheap Android phone so that you don't knacker your nice phone, just making a suggestion for you to consider, you know what you want and how much you want to spend.

I've just started using Locus Map on my phone having used a garmin edge 705 for a decade, garmin watch to record and upload etc. I've tried using trailforks (often shows me going 90 degrees to my actual direction) and google maps (not so good when up in the hills and you loose signal).

Locus map has a free version that I used last night, it is a doddle to record tracks with an impressive level of detail, it can download maps to be used offline, has connectivity for ant+ so hrm and cadence sensor compatible and the mapping is the best that I've found so far. Most importantly for me, it has live tracking so that MrsTaff can find out where I am when I'm out cycling because I normally ride alone and well, I kind of crash a bit.
the full paid for version has more functionality and is only £9.

I've got a good mount for my handlebar and despite crashing too many times I haven't had the phone come out of the mount or get damaged.

I've spent a few minutes downloading local mtb trails out of trailforks and uploading them into my locus map file so I'm building up a library of the local unofficial trails. It's a little bit of a PITA having to do them one by one via google drive, but it's worth the few minutes it takes

Taff that sounds good, i am currently looking for a decent app that i can download other people's GPX files and use on it, id love directions as well.

Never actually thought of using an old phone - I have a Sony Xperia sat around that I could use......
