More Dull Questions: I need a new legal numberplate

Post by Mr Moofo »

There are (obviously) about 5 million companies.
I have the V5
I am saying legal because getting pulled for a small plate in a bit 1993 ...

Recommendations or are they all basically the same?

Order one off Amazon, it's a lot less hassle.

You don't need the V5 unless you want to pay over the top, loads of show plate companies also offer road legal plates. I just look on eBay for one with a clear photo of what they provide and a low price.

I've bought a couple off of Amazon, no proof of ownership but not great quality - metal but a faded yellow rather than a bright yellow (passed it's MOT though).

Ok, just to really grown up about this, and be dull, boring and legal.
IF you buy from an online vendor who does not require a V5, then your plate will have neither a bs mark or makers id, rendering it illegal and you liable for S53?
Number plates aren't tested for legality as part of the MOT.
SWMBO got stopped on the way back from a MOT for no tax last year, the anpr picked it up perfectly, then the copper had a quick look and told her her plates needed changing and issued her with a 7 day ticket.
She did mention that since the anpr did its job, the plates were fine, but no dice

I used bike-plate.com all legal & above board. A lot of plate places on line either don't know or don't care that bikes can use smaller numerals & letters than cars. With a 6 digit plate mine is just 6.5" sq & perfectly legit 👍

Does a road legal bike plate not need to be 9" x 7"?

Not necessarily & is why I kept a 6 digit no plate. Letters and numbers have to be a certain size and spacing & border has to be a certain size, leaflet INF104 from Dvla explains it all.

Unless you have an I and 1 in your reg that is!
Min size for 6 is 6.85 X 6.41", unless you have both an I and a 1.

That’s a 7x5 purchased from A1 plates above so no V5 required and not stamped as a comment above has stated and the plod didn’t even notice. The reason they didn’t notice imho is purely that it’s not a million miles away from the standard size and looks perfectly fine, the ones that fill fit that are ridiculously different then yeah I’m sure you’ll get your fartbox felt. I know a group of idiot riders down south that go out religiously with their plates removed and it beggars belief to why they haven’t been stopped and shafted.

There’s a Pound shop on Bethnal Green road doing them for any size font etc …
My CBR had a letterbox one when I bought it - that’s asking for trouble

Standard size is 66mmx44mm characters, with a 10mm between and 10mm border.
Size of the plate doesn't matter as long as you can fit the above sizes in you are legal.
The manufacturers name and postcode used to be a testable item on an Mot, but was dropped years ago and they do not have to display this.
It doesn't make them illegal if they are not displayed, as long as the font sizing and spacing is correct.

I'm not sure the letter I is even used in registrations? But I do have 1 in my reg & please forgive me for my 0.35" transgression...

Years ago a mate got stopped by the police, he'd been very naughty but they hadn't been able to get him on anything so were going over his bike with a fine tooth comb, out came a ruler and the copper started measuring his number plate. "It's too small" said the copper, too which my mate replied "so a kids Star Wars ruler you're using is an approved police measuring device?" There was a rather bad sense of humour failure by the policeman but he got let off.
"Of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which ones weren't?"
"My dear Doctor, they're all true."
"Even the lies?"
"Especially the lies."

Bethnal Green - TBH I want to live out my last few years. That is way too much risk for a 1.50 GBP numberplate ..
