Tyre warmers 🤷‍♂️

Post by Dodgy69 »

Why...

An observation from trac mon was that most have them. Question is, are they necessary ?

As I see it, in racing it's go for it from ko ,so yes for better grip first corner, but on a trackday you can go easy for a lap or 2.

So why do trackdayers bother. 🤷‍♂️

So they can go from corner 1 is the simple answer. It's not different to using a super knife to cut veggies or a posh hose to spray the lawn. It's an easy way to get the most out of the equipment you have.

There's a second argument that it lessens heat cycles which helps with rubber longevity but I'd need more proof to be sure.

It could also remove the cold tearing issue and maybe again increase tyre life.

Dunlop GpRacers work after half a lap. I never used warmers.

It takes a lap anyway to get yer brain up to speed and dialled in.

Never raced a class that allowed warmers, so have no idea what difference they make.

In a race you get a warm up/form up lap which puts enough heat in tyres to go into the first corner at at least 90%.

I guess for trackdays if you can go 100% on your first lap then your £ per fast lap is better.

I never got into that idea. Just an Internet myth. My tyres did 15 - 20 some days. No problems.

I went on several tyre seminars over the years and none of them mentioned problems with heat cycles.

Indeed, Dunlop encourage them with the GPracers

On the flip side, I saw 'proper' novice riders with them, so maybe in all fairness, it gives them more confidence.

Probably give them false confidence.

Why? Why can't it just give them confidence?

Gives confidence yes, but how long do people sit in pitlane for waiting to be released loosing most of the heat? Seen plenty go down on warm-up laps.
I used warmers but waited until last knocking to go out and then pin it.

The problem with that is, everyone does it, then when they're about ready to go out no one is there, then they all get held as the organisers check wrist bands and somehow blame the organisers for fucking up their day

I used warmers a bit briefly when on supercorsas but could never get past the 'need a lap to warm the tyres' thinking, despite warmers. Did use them on the slicks and they were probably more necessary then. But I suspect I was always a bit less pushy until I'd done the first corner!!

On first session, everyone lined up, wrist band check, tap on back for protector check, marshall signs bike sticker and good to go. 2nd session onwards, out of garage and straight on track. No holding after first session. 👍

It might give them too much confidence. Just being cautious.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it and it depends what tyres you’re running but the tyres going through one heat cycle as oppose to x amount during the track day will prolong the life of the tyre.

Also easier to maintain optimum pressures.

Confidence, allows them to go quicker straight away and get the most from the day. Each to their own, whatever works.

Has anyone mentioned heat cycles?

Anyway, I never worried about all that tyre warmer bollocks; just gave it plenty of throttle, then hard on the brakes, then ganned it reet over.

One of the last trackdays I did there was a bloke on a Ducati 1098 with slicks and warmers in the novice group. My mate was saying how slow he was and was near back of the pack in the novices.

On the one hand slicks and warmers might give him some confidence. On the other the slicks wouldn't be anywhere near their operating temp so he'd have got arguably better grip from a road tyre with no warmers designed to work at lower speeds/temps. But his money I guess and if he was happy

For me I never bothered on the basis I'm not that fast and happy to spend a lap and a bit getting comfy and building back up to (my) speed.

I never bothered with them because

1. I can't be arsed with the faff
2. I'm too tight to buy them

Which was probably nothing to do with tyres or tyre temperatures.
