Russell Brand

Post by Screwdriver »

I have been following Russell Brand for some time now. He has changed considerably from his days of old.

I don't hesitate to recommend his channel, this video is a pretty good example...

He was always a knob - now he has become a “ desperate for publicity” knob.

Isn’t he just a Poundland Seth wotsit?

Well you've clearly not bothered to watch the video so why do you need me to tell you what to think?

I don't know nor care what his motivations are, I am more interested in the topic area. This sort of topic is covered by all sorts of people with a huge range of motivations, narratives, biases and political leanings. What makes Brand interesting is that he is quite surprisingly agnostic and gives sources, quotes and interviews a bunch of expert commentators from a cross section of the political divide.

Not only that but as a comedian, he's pretty funny too.

Maybe you should just stick to believing what Pfizer tell you. After all, they're an unbiased source of reliable information in the world of medicine.

Aren't they??

I was mistaken - I thought you had posted an internet site. Clearly, you think he is a latter day oracle. I think he is a 2nd rate publicity seeking knob.
It’s just opinions.
I am sure he has a fan site for you

I think this must be where I am going wrong: I was more interested in the content regarding the harvesting of poor people for their blood and the resale of that product to feed corporate greed.

Maybe I should post a link to XNXX.com if that's what you're looking for.

No it's actually a video. A bit like a TV set but on the internet. You click the little triangle and a series of images flash before you as if they are moving. Then words come out which if you feed them into a brain, can encourage something we call thought.

You will need to somehow acquire a brain if you ever want to do any actual thinking though. Sorry to bother you.

Wow. I am definitely going wrong somewhere. Those three would be in my top ten comics I could happily watch. Not so much now that the last two have sold out and become mainstream.

Ricky Gervais is possibly one of the most talented, cleverest chaps out there who went into comedy. Ronnie Barker was another. The depth of his talent was quite extraordinary. Same with Ricky. He has doe a lot more than "The Office".

This thread has become less about the subject and more about the presenter.

What is this. The fucking BBC?

Hang on. You posted a list of people saying you don't want to hear there (sic.) voices again. Not me.

It does not matter to me who you do or do not like. I always thought Russell was a bit of a knob and I couldn't stand the vacuous thesaurus of nonsense he used to spout - quite recently too.

Now he seems (to me) to have calmed down, presumably now he's become a dad. Suddenly (it would appear) he is tackling difficult and contentious subjects which address many of the issues that concern me (corporate greed, political corruption, concentration of wealth etc.).

I titled this thread as I did because his relatively new YouTube channel is full of interesting and thought provoking content which when I found it recently, he appeared to be a totally different character. I think I ran into it because of an interview with Jordan Peterson.

You came into this thread despite the title warning you he's on your list... :obscene-birdiedoublered:

Your logic is flawed. I am not defending my position on Russell Brand, I was pointing to an interesting and humorous perspective on blood sucking business enterprises which is at the same time both horrific, hilarious and an indictment of the current situation with our corporate masters.

You ignore the information being presented to you because you don't like the presenter. For the comic aspect, that's understandable but information does not change depending on the personality of the source. Isaac Newton was a truly horrible character and yet I am pretty sure you'll be quite happy to carry on using gravity anyway.

We demand a choice!

PS Regarding 'concentration of wealth' - Russell B is 'worth' $20M (Not exactly Elon Musk, but not bad for telling jokes). Gervais is 'worth' $140M.

Ok, I pressed the triangle.

First thought was - as often advised here - do some background reading.

Actually, no. First thought was "I don't like being shouted at, listening to this could be hard work."

Then "the rich". Same thought as CS, so a check, and:

Next thought was: "this is new?"

No, it's not. The US has been exporting blood products for decades, e.g.:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/202 ... e-infected

1970s & 80s

Perhaps it gets to be a worse story further on. But a rich (whether assets or cash, I don't know) bloke shouting about 'the rich' benefiting from an increase in something that's been known about for decades?

Sorry, gave it a go.

It's a shame, Brand has some interesting things to say, is engaging and he talks well. I don't necessarily agree with them all! But he obviously brings with him the baggage of hatred from those who think he's a tool, they're not listening, probably never will.

For those whose humour is other-flavoured, Jim Davidson has a YouTube channel where he rants on like an elderly has-been comic about how he's been misjudged as a rassist - he does this by reinforcing his racism. It's hilarious.

A bit more background reading and checking.

RB's video, how recent is it?

This from the Guardian, 2020.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... us-trouble

Looking to make extra cash? Don’t want to retrain in “cyber” but need a new gig? Good news! All you need to do is contract Covid-19, try not to die, then sell your antibody-rich blood plasma. Blood centres in the US are currently paying Covid-19 survivors a premium for their plasma, the yellowish liquid that makes up about 55% of blood. Apparently, you can get $100-$200 (£75-£155) a pop.

In the UK, and many other countries, we give blood for free. Its not the same everywhere.

WHO say:

In 56 countries, more than 50% of the blood supply is still dependent on family/replacement and paid blood donors (nine high-income countries, 37 middle-income countries and 10 low-income countries).
16 countries report collecting paid donations in 2018, around 276 000 donations in total.

I give my blood to the nbts (the French won't take it!) and they obviously give me nowt for it. I'm not particularly altruistic but it's good to know they genuinely need this and I can "save lives" indirectly without actually having to donate any body parts I still effing need or was fond of up until my very recent demise. I've done it for 35 years now ffs, they must be doing something right.

Would I sell my blood if I needed the money? Probably yes and as long as it didn't make me ill I guess that's no problem. I'm lucky though, I see loads of people struggle to squeak a pint out or for whom the whole donation thing is a trial. So that's where I think the problem lies. (Mine comes out no bother, in and out in a flash.)

I don't really care if businesses make money out of it, everyone's moral barometer is different. The blood for sale Issue us just a good headline.

We all - well, most - have to sell something to survive, whether that is mental or physical effort in the majority of cases. When times are hard, we consider selling assets.

Selling blood is an extreme extent of selling what you have.
