KTM 390 Adventure?

I'm still dithering about what bike to buy.

Favorite currently is a Honda CRF300 Rally. But they're only available new and seem hard to get.

The KTM 390 Adventure seems like a good option, if a bit weird styling.

I only want it for short journeys and some very light off roading so maybe the KTM would be ok. I'd need a top box but they seem readily available.

I guess my main worry is being a KTM will it go wrong a lot and need dealer rather than home servicing?

I thought about the Enfield Himalayan but I think I'd find it a bit slow on the occasions I did go on larger roads.

On a sample of one a mate had a 390 and it looked like it had spent it’s life in the sea.

Another thing to consider is how you’d fit on it. Admittedly he was tall but he looked like one of those circus clowns.

I struggle to pick up my Husky which weighs about 105 kgs

You do have to wonder what KTM were thinking. Or is it just that they have to have an 'Adventure' in every market segment? Sounds plain daft to me. The 890R is only a few kg more, and I know which I'd go for.

I've seen it listed as 158kg.

The Honda 300 Rally is 153kg.

Doesn't everyone quote wet weights these days? That confuses me. Help, help! Can I get one with big buttons? Where's the nice person who looks after me?

I have a 390 Adventure and a 1250 GS but it's the small bike I mainly ride these days. It is great fun to ride, has plenty of poke and is ideal for back roads, commuting and will handle light off-roading pretty well. I have toured Wales and the west country on mine in 2021 and it handles the hills and the twisties just fine. It's extremely economical and I'm getting 230 miles from a tank of petrol. There is a long thread (currently 383 pages) on ADVrider.com and a couple of FB groups where you can see the sort of stuff people are doing with them.

What you want is a CB500X and a copy of the Rally Raid catalogue.

If it's too heavy, you need get on the anabolics, innit.

The 390 adv seems good value, it’ll cope with most of the UK green lanes with a tyre change. Cast wheels are no issue as you aren’t doing the same speed as an enduro bike. On the road sections of which there are loads it’s better than any enduro. It’s a weird thing in the UK that if you want to go green laning everyone recommends a competition bike with a 60 mile tank range and services measured in hours, green laning is riding mainly in the road with some off road. No one recommends a a full on race bike for track days they are quite happy to take a fat 220kg road bike yet soon as you want to go off road you need a race bike.
Back to the 390, I’d rather a 300 rally but as you say you can’t get them. That’s what led me to look at the 390 too and there doesn’t seem to be many downsides

I phoned them today and would have bought it on the phone... but it had gone.

There's one in Bristol allegedly for five three but Bristol is a bit far away. I might see if a used one comes up near home.

Or maybe I'll get the urge to buy something else.
