Warranty

So boys and girls the subject of warranty on a new bike. I really don't want to pay £100 an hour for something I have been doing for over 40 years. This is only my 2nd new spanky new bike and the first got nicked. I am excluding my new Honda SS50 as a youth I sold that before any servicing required. So anyone successfully made overtures to the manufacturer to allow them to do their own servicing? Obviously using OEM parts is a given.

I think it has to be a VAT registered business if non franchise, they could also argue you can’t service to manufacturers spec without diagnostic equipment and they could also ask your competence. Of course a good dealer may ignore all this and be helpful. Personally if it’s a Japanese bike I wouldn’t worry about warranty

Manufacturers aren't allowed to insist you use dealer servicing to maintain the warranty, nor can they restrict the supply of parts/equipment. 'Tis the law...or at least it was. It was an EU law!

AFAIK though they can insist you use a professional mechanic.

As couchy says, it has to be a vat registered business with OEM parts, but for the cost difference between that and a dealer I would just suck it up and get it done at a dealer.

I know my Yamaha was plugged into a laptop and seemed to run 3 different update type things and diagnostic tools.

So I can see why they'd think it needs to be done by them these days

Non franchise dealers can access all the latest updates too. That's also the law.

Whether or not they bother is another Q.

I know my bike is too old for warranty but during my chat with the main dealer about the failed fuel sensor they asked for a copy of my service history to send to Ducati to try and get it done FOC. I pointed out that all the servicing was main dealer apart from the last one which was done by an Independent and the main dealer were happy with that as it was a recognized Italian specialist with the diagnostic kit

Might not be relevant to a new bike warranty though

As a manufacturer would you warranty a product if the person working on it didn’t have the latest diagnostic eqpt and wasn’t a qualified mechanic ? Lots of us can service a bike as good as a dealer or better but plenty can’t which is why they would ask for the above if there was a claim.
A friendly dealer may help especially if you buy the oil etc from them and explain, certainly if you’ve bought the bike from them it’ll help 👍

I’m just gonna get mine dealer serviced.

a. Because I’m lazy and I know I’d let it slide.

b. More importantly if anything goes wrong during the warranty period it’s going to be big bucks to fix and I want all the backup I can get. After that I might consider doing it myself.

You'll have to check the terms of your warranty and ask the manufacturer if they'll allow it. I can't believe you'll have much luck with them allowing you to do the servicing yourself though.

Well yeah, this is definitely a valid point.

If you're buying Yamaha servicing hardware, Yamaha parts and downloading Yamaha software you're pretty much a Yamaha dealer aren't you? :D

Yo mac.

In the past I haven't been a big buyer of new bikes,a 350 Yam,a 125 Innova and the current Zed,that's my lot in 50 years of bikes. None of them ever went back to a dealer for anything past the first service.

I bought the Z1000 new from a franchised dealer in 2020 and took it back for it's 600 mile free service and that's been it for me. I've done all the oil and filter changes myself and well below the recommended service intervals. I used genuine Kawa parts. there is now 10k on the bike.
The thing is,I removed the cat and had the ecu flashed within the warranty period,so I'm stuffed for cover anyway. Personally,I'd rather have the bike the way I want it,rather than pissing about being careful I don't bork the warranty.

Thanks for the replies all opinions are appreciated. I bought the bike new in May 2021 Honda X-Adv. Only done 2 5k on it as use the Burg 650 as my daily run around. Seems the decision has been made for me as the bike has exhibited a gremlin. That is that when warmed up it refused to go into drive until it cooled down a bit. Defo a warranty issue so I will have to err on the side of caution and pay some monkey silly money to change the fluids and poke a few buttons on a lap top. 😡

I feel your pain. I was £178 last week for a bit of oil and a poke around.

Servicing your bike with another dealer will not automatically invalidate the warranty, but please make sure that the dealer registers each service interval.

On the other hand, we do strongly advise to let the services be carried out by a certified Yamaha dealer, as our contractors receive regular training from Yamaha and have the special tools on site.

There's a difference between 'another dealer' bloke doing at home.
