Science Of Being Seen (SOBS) LIVE ONLINE

Post by The Spin Doctor »

I'm running the latest Science Of Being Seen presentation on Wednesday night...
...but this one's a bit different.

I'll be taking an in-depth look at one of the most most misunderstood issues around visual perception - why it is that something can be within our 'field of view' and thus capable of being seen, but frequently isn't spotted, and how this is nothing to do with "looking in the wrong place", it's not explained by "poor scanning techniques", and it's certainly not explained by "carelessness or distraction".

The common sense argument that "if a motorcycle is visible, we will see it if we look hard enough" simply isn't true, as any stage illusionist knows.
So in this talk, I'll be explaining the science behind human visual perception- how the human eye processes incoming visual data, and how that visual data is processed by the brain and turned into what we call vision.

Even if you have already seen the full version of SOBS, this IN-DEPTH look at a subset of the full presentation will offer you additional insights into the problems of the 'looked but failed to see' error by drivers, and the resulting SMIDSY collision.

Get an enhanced understanding of why drivers don't see bikes... and why bikers may not realise there's a threat!

So, just a quick reminder:

In @The Spin Doctor’s Science of Being Seen book, it mentions reflectivity being most effective on the lower leg because this area catches car headlights. Has Richa seen the light :D ? Richa Flare Boots are covered with retro reflective material that’s black by day, reflective by night.

Also, the Richa Flare range includes jackets, rain overjackets, and several gloves using this “ghost” reflective material. It fits with the Science of Being Seen’s nighttime advice and, IMO, looks like a bright idea :) for late evening rides.

The boots would have limited impact, since folk will have their leathers/trousers over most of the boot.

Fair point. I guess my boots go over my (dry weather) leathers but under my winter trousers.

... Very few crashes are rear-end impacts anyway, and only a few of them might be influenced by additional retroreflective material?

@Horse I’m one of the lucky few to have been rear ended (fnar, fnar). While stationary. Twice.

If only I had been wearing hi-viz boots :)

Stop-start traffic, nudge.

The bike's rack was bent up (just needed the bolts loosened to reposition) left a good scar on the centre of the car bonnet. Yes, he said it "Sorry .. "

Sadly, I don't have a pic of my first Daytona boots. MX style, Goretex lined. £50 clearance bargain. The catch? Well ... dayglo panels, purple inserts and 'Daytona' writ large, diagonally across the shin, in pink. :) Kewl, not :D
