It'll be fixable - but slightly inconvenient!

No I'll either be on "Reasonable Grounds for Divorce" or Lady Payne depending on how dragging RGfD out of mothballs goes.

@Mr. Dazzle and @millemille any opinions on what could have caused the failure ?

Re: Well that's all rather boring🙁🤬
Hard to tell, but is that orange stuff rust? If it is that probably means its been cracking for a while which suggests fatigue. How's the other side look?
Are those brazed in drop outs? Looks like the dropout is a tongue brazed into the stay?
It doesn't look like to braze itself had failed, its the parent material just upstream of the joint which has cracked I think? Might be an incorrectly done braze changing the steel properties unexpectedly.

BTW if I'm right about the way its made they can potentially replace the whole dropout.
P.S. having worked with a few different bike companies I reckon only 50% of them have any understanding of the stresses in their stuff

Curtis have been brazing frames for decades and it’s the first one they’ve seen fail at this point so hopefully it’s a defect in the dropout (like that DC10 fan failure). I’ll try and get a picture of the face once I’ve stripped it.

Yeah brazed frames go back as far as at least the 19th century right?
I would guess fatigue but the fix is the same whatever the cause. You might be surprised how few bike firms do proper fatigue testing or even know what it entails. No idea if Curtis is among that number.

Well they've been building custom/bespoke frames since 1972 and have an excellent reputation, so they've either been doing it right, or very luckyMr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 8:15 am Yeah brazed frames go back as far as at least the 19th century right?

It will be interesting to see what the response from Curtis is - obviously if is not a tube folding or creasing - but it is a fairly major stress failure.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 8:17 amWell they've been building custom/bespoke frames since 1972 and have an excellent reputation, so they've either been doing it right, or very luckyMr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 8:15 am Yeah brazed frames go back as far as at least the 19th century right?

Maybe Ming needs to go FS?

Sounds like a plan... if only there was a ride this weekend with some people riding FSs he could test and seeMr Moofo wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 10:06 amIt will be interesting to see what the response from Curtis is - obviously if is not a tube folding or creasing - but it is a fairly major stress failure.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 8:17 amWell they've been building custom/bespoke frames since 1972 and have an excellent reputation, so they've either been doing it right, or very luckyMr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 8:15 am Yeah brazed frames go back as far as at least the 19th century right?

Which is kinda funny as i think one of them may already be getting a test... I think @crust may be testing out the Sworks.

Curtis have said send it back and they will fix it. They've never seen one fail at that point before. The other side dropout looks fine. Already stripped and cleaned it, just needs boxing up.
I've dragged RGfD (specie enduro) out of the shed after not being used in at least 20 months and surprisingly all it needs are new tyres. Not sure how the shock will last and the brakes have early stage SRAM cancer so I won't be disturbing them to much with new pads.
