If you were to build your perfect bike for riding a mix of trails, some downhill stuff and some South downs type stuff- what would you go for? I'm selfishly hoping to use this thread as inspiration for an ebay shopathon. It started with me thinking I need a new, more comfortable seat

Bars are standard Whyte bars on both bikes

Wheels Hope Pro4 with tech enduro rims

Brakes both me and my lad are on SRAM Guide R.

Saddle : ISM Adamo Peak (funny shape but if you've a grumpy prostate or sensitive plums they are perfect.
Bars: can't really go wrong with Renthals, but if you can hold out Rust Ti bars will be back at some point.
Grips: DMR death grips
Pedals: NOT anything by HT and my Burgtecs developed play after 8 months. Currently using DMR Brendog flats and Time Speciale 8 clips.
Brakes: SRAM Guides or Codes depending on how er bulky you are.

Selle Italia Turbo saddle for me, I'm old school. And it's got "Turbo" written on it which, as every fool knows, makes you faster...

Ergon SM saddle - I have real saddle issues. The most comfortable is a Brooks - but every laughs wen i turn up with it on a mountain bike
Pike forks/ Yari if you are chunky ...
Bars - whatever ... you get used to what you have. The current fashion is very wide. Some like risers , some like flat. Spank Vibrocore have a good reputation for comfort.
Tyres - whatever maxxis is offering cheap.
Ergon GA3 grips - the lip bit stops your hands going numb.
Brakes - Shimano deore. and then throw away if they go wrong. But I am a big fan of Hope because you can rebuild them. but they are expensive / heavy. But I am not light.

Pedals - I was a die hard clipped in rider - but i am now ride flats more and more often. I have some Funn Mambas - one side flat / one side spd.

I'm a roady, so no idea what you guys are on about

Fairly sure I had one of those on my time trial bike in about 1987.

Renthal bars and stem for me.

Pedals, riding in the rutted and rocky strewn Peak District means I treat them as disposable items so don't bother spending wads on them. I'm an SPD devotee, had one of the first sets, along with the original Shimano bowling shoes, when the first came out in the early 90's. Currently using the M424 pedals, the resin cage around the spd pedal itself offers a degree of protection and it doesn't make our wallet weep when they get clanged...

Endura stuff is /was good .
Be aware they not generous in their sizing - esp in undershorts.
However their xxl ones are bloody enormous...

Humvees always used to be the go to choice for me... however you can now get 2/3 way stretch fabric ( which makes a lot of sense) : so also look at Nukeproof stuff , and the Steve Peat brand "Royal Racing"
