Since I've had the mt09, any dampness on the road is thrown up my back and pillion seat, if that's what it's for. OK , its got the Yamaha tail tidy but when researching, even with stock set up it's a problem because of narrow metal work.

On Mt's, the seat and light finish the bikes rear end, so tyre sits very proud out back, therefore throwing up shit. It is a common design on naked bikes these days and was followed with the introduction of those horrible number plate hanger things.

So, I fitted a rack, but still shit got under it, so today I've filled in the gaps with sheet plastic ( lads old college folder) and hoping it works. It's a shame I've had to do this on a new bike. And, with the indicators popping out of their fixings ,( design flaw by Yamaha and without doubt will change on next model for sure) at the slightest brush, that two big faults for me.

I'd even started looking at bike replacements. If this don't work its going. I don't mind riding wet roads, I like a trip and these two faults would dampen my biking enjoyment.

So the bodge looks ok i think, would be in the way of straps but with roll bag on back seat, spray shouldn't be a problem.

In other news, my Xmas present arrived size Large. spot on. Happy now.

The solution is a hugger. DAMHIKT

TBH that looks okay.

Only real answer is a proper mudguard like a 1987 FZ750, which looked hideous.

I think the problem is that you're fixing a problem that doesn't happen usually.

The reason i say that is, the number plate hanger may be narrow at the mounts, but is wide at the plate area, so you're getting all the spray stopped lower down. Where you've now got yours is high so the spray coming off is much higher and spread out up there.

Maybe to a degree, but reading up, it's a problem on stock set up aswel.

Have you tried? Seriously, first time out in the wet my CB500F sprayed my back badly, a hugger cured it. IMO most modern bikes are improved* by a hugger.

I haven't, but read about some that have. The hugger would need to wrap around more tyre. The one's available are pretty much shock protectors.

My model of Multistrada comes with a tiny little triangular deflector attached to the swingarm reaching over a little of the rear wheel. They also come with a full tyre width and twice as long hugger type attachment wrapped in bubble wrap

Mine also has the crud catcher thing across the back of the rear wheel but again i took it off as "eeta looksa sheet!" despite keeping some of the crap off the rear of the bike

Cover the back seat with laters of clingfilm and pull them off one by one like visor tearoffs

Out on the mt again this morning, it was drizzling so roads were slippy wet with muddy farm shite, tree debri stuff and quite foggy in places. PERFECT.

Good test conditions for my plastic spray blocker and i am pleased to report,( to myself anyway ) it's an improvement. Still muddy water spray about but jacket back was reasonably clean.

I'm thinking, the bike creates some sort of vortex at a certain speed, which is causing a rotating mass of road shite to loop around my rack and deposit itself on my pillion seat. ☹ However, the PSB is stopping direct spray from between seat and under rack, therefore I'm happy enough for now.

If I had a bigger garage I'd consider a wet day bike, little versys or summot, but I ain't so that ain't happening, plus I'd struggle to get that one passed the Mrs. Happy days

My mt09 soaked me whenever it rained, mine was an 18 with the rear number plate monstrosity that hung off the swingarm, it was perfectly ok until I fitted a tail tidy.

I think the number plate monstrosity you mention is ultimately the answer. The 21 bike doesn't have one. I personally never tried standard set up in the wet but reading up, folk report it's still a problem, but I would imagine not as big.

Looking at pic's, the extended bracket and plate/holder is doing this job to a degree. I've been in touch with Wigan yamaha and when they get a spare stock hanger they'll send it down. Mine got binned, too many number P hangers in the garage never to see light again, but this one would have.


Oh, and another thing, the poxy seat lock is underneath, directly above tyre ffs, have to break my back to get at it. Indicators drop out if you fart near them. ☹
