Nearly bought a Ducati 999s today
But common sense and rational thinking got is the way of what could have been a really stupid idea.
And then my resolved slipped, I phoned back - and it was gone.
I guess that is god telling me it was best for me not to have it

Ooooh. I don't think it's anythings way of telling you something, that's crazy talk and voodoo doll territory.
They're beautifully put together.
Financially even if you ride it once and hate it, as long as it's a decent one, you won't lose on it

Re: Nearly bought a Ducati 999s today
Cons:
Crippling to ride under 80mph.
Looks only a mother could love.
Pros:
Not as desirable as the 99x series, not as expensive as the 10xx/11xx bikes and therefore cheaper.
It's still Ducati's most winningest Superbike.

Tbh I think the 916/996/998 have fallen out of favour really.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 8:53 pm Cons:

1098s I'm not convinced they're hot property either.

916 derivatives are selling for stupid money - and although stunning to look a, I know what they re like to own and ride.
The 999 has dated well
But until I can learn to do timing belts myself, common sense has told me that it's too expensive as "yet another bike" ( as my wife says)

Re: Nearly bought a Ducati 999s today
The 749/999 are odd bikes.
I'm sure they're on the cusp of being classics, probably good investments if you plan to keep for 5 or more years.
They still had the short/expensive servicing of the 9xx bikes, but without the 'design that change bikes forever' (if you believe the press). The 1098/1198 got the 15K service intervals iirc which make them a bit cheaper to run, but look a bit more 'Japanese'.
I know a bloke had a 999, replaced it with a mk2 RSV1000 and was much, much happier.

They've gone up by a grand this year looking at prices.
Maybe most bikes have. Dunno.

Re: Nearly bought a Ducati 999s today
It's the only Ducati I've ridden. My memory tells me I liked it. The riding position fitted me just like my 04 10R.
It was one of those bikes I could get on and just ride, without feeling odd or conscious of it being different.
I was surprised, as I'm no Ducati fanboi.

I rode one back to back with my own 98 Blade.
It was PB's long term test bike and it shit it's guts not long afterwards. It was crippling, in comparison to the touring Blade.

If I had the money and a garage, I'd have a 916. It was the first Ducati I rode (although that one was an SPS version!!).Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 9:00 pm 916 derivatives are selling for stupid money - and although stunning to look a, I know what they re like to own and ride.

As for timing belts, how much different are they from a Monster? As far as I'm aware, I managed the timing belts on the Monster a couple of years ago with 1.5 useful arms!! Not sure that's an excuse for someone better at mechanics than I am?!!

The watercooled bikes are twincam.
You have to loop the belt over an extra cam... and make sure it doesn't lose the timing. I think there's more stuff in the way too.
Also setting the tension is done by plucking the belt and tightening it until it plays a specific musical note.

Re: Nearly bought a Ducati 999s today
As said above, I suspect values will go up.
I remember back in the day, they were said to be very expensive to service and the following series (10xx) had lower service costs. Maybe that doesn't really apply any more.

Standard OW01s, apart from being a little bit of an arse to ride, are pretty easy to live with, I think the valve clearances are every 28,000 miles and oil and filter every 5000, like the rest of the big FZRs.

I recall Pierre Terblanche telling me he'd designed the 999 to be more roomy and comfortable than its predecessors, just before I took to the track on one of the launch bikes.

Re: Nearly bought a Ducati 999s today
I don't remember an awful lot about it. Those trips all blended into one in a way. I can't even be sure which country it was. Probably Italy. I think Potski and Hoylesey-Woylsey were there too. It was like a rolling international boys club. I think the chap from Superbike took a nasty tumble; but that was the game we played.Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 3:48 pmDid you, James, Carl and Neil compare notes?Asian Boss wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 3:48 pm I recall Pierre Terblanche telling me he'd designed the 999 to be more roomy and comfortable than its predecessors, just before I took to the track on one of the launch bikes.
