Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
While I’d heard that motorcycling’s safer than horse riding, I didn’t know it was also safer than skiing.
So, thank goodness I’m staying safe by motorcycling this winter, not risking life and limb on a ski slope. (It’s cheaper, too. My après-motorcycle is a pint of Fursty Ferret.)

If I was a horse rider who also skies, or – heaven forbid – rode a horse on skis, I mightn’t be here to tell the tale.

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
LOL I'm a biker that skis when there's snow and can't ride a bike, but also grew up riding horses!!
Accidents with major breaks so far -
1980 (ish) - horse riding, compression fracture of L1 (no lasting effects!!)
1997 - parachuting, compression fracture of L2 (no lasting effects!!)
2017 - motorbike, smashed up right shoulder - lots of lasting effects!!!
Skiing so far just bangs and bruises. Hoping to keep it that way!! LOL
(TBF, if I could guarantee future back injuries would be as lasting-effect-free as the first two, I'd take that over the shoulder injury any day!!!)
PS - despite the facts and figures, I never did persuade my mother that biking was safer than horse riding

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
Many years ago the very ex missus had various horses when we were together and I made the conscious decision one day that I was going to have a proper go at horse riding and would get good at it, yeah fuck that! Went out the very first time and thought “no chance, too dangerous”………
Never went skiing either, no desire to, maybe one day.

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
I've only ridden three times since I was about 17. Each time, whilst I enjoy it, I can't believe that people think that riding something with its own brain and more strength than me is considered safer than a motorbike!! At least on the bike I only have to worry about my brain!!wull wrote: ↑Thu Nov 25, 2021 8:10 pm Many years ago the very ex missus had various horses when we were together and I made the conscious decision one day that I was going to have a proper go at horse riding and would get good at it, yeah fuck that! The girlfriend and her kids ride, their lives revolve around horses, all 3 have current injuries, at any one time Atleast one of them is injured.
I have two motorbikes, I have no injuries and no old injuries giving me problems other than a bad foot which was due to a fat twat of a horse standing on it

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
Ive been horse riding twice, the first time one of the horses started attacking the other horses, motorcycles don't do that QED motorcycles are safer.

A bunch of engineers I worked with - all motorcyclists - used to go skiing for a week every year.
And every year one came back in some way broken.

I sort of did. I was such a crashing twat in my yoof, my mates begged me to go racing. So sort of applies to me.
Do I get a badge or a sticker or summat ?

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
Tried skiing when i was about 18, didnt have much fear so lots of speed and the inevitable slowing down by crashing .......and it was cold so bollocks to that.
After my divorce met a very well off woman who was seriously into horse riding and i tried to follow her hobbies as she was open to learning bikes too ....... During the time we were together i managed a few horse rides with her but always thought "fuck this it has a brain to decide what to do and i am only in control when it wants me to be". She then started showing the x rays when the last horse landed on her breaking her pelvis as well as a tib and fib
Fuck that, bikes are safer

Ask North York’s air ambulance who their most popular calls are, and it’s motorcyclists and horse riders.
Not much skiing in North Yorkshire.

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
Is it perceived safety with some sports versus motorbikes?
I mountain bike and the most safety kit I wear is a helmet (probably not a very good one) and gloves, but I've seen 35 - 40mph on my tracker once I've got home. I've came off a few times but mostly been scrapes or an aching shoulder (Actually, that lasted for a few months so I may have done more damage than I thought at first)
Shopping for motorbike gear and it's all armour and whatnot. I get the speeds can be faster, but the level of protection versus skiing or horseriding seems to be a massive jump

During the 80s most deaths one year was fishing. The brought in them mega long fishing rods and folk were killed when they touched overhead power lines.

Re: Motorcycling: safer than skiing or horse riding
Wearing airbag jackets is quite common amongst horse riders. But then so is not wearing a helmet.
