Man’s Best Friend
Monty Don’s dog, Nigel, has died. Monty said ‘he was part of our family’.
I have an imaginary dog called Fido. He’s very obedient, doesn’t shed hair, is cheap to keep but does need lots of walks! He’s named after a small toy dog I had on wheels when I was a 3 year old. Loved that dog. Why Fido though? I have no idea.
As we know, dogs are man’s best friend. For those who have or had a dog, what did you call them and why?

I don't have a dog, but when I can have one, it will be called Max (short for Maximus)
Max is a trustworthy name, Max is your mate, your buddy, you can rely on a Max.
Plus it's easy to add a Y and as I understand, dogs respond well to words with Y/IE at the end.

Re: Man’s Best Friend
The very best but most outrageously badly behaved dog we’ve ever owned ( it’s not the dog, it’s the owners, I know)
Pretty sure she can’t distinguish between Nova and No!!!!!
Wouldn’t change a thing, my best mate

Shame about Nigel
Nigel and Nellie really added to the tranquility of Monty's gardening program. Mrs GP was in pieces when she found out about Nigel's demise yesterday, Its amazing how much "dog people" feel connected to animals they haven't even met!

It's not that bad.....It wasn't mixed up with Peppa as in Peppa Pig was it, given it came from the mouth of a 5 year old??
Has the dog grown any bigger or can you still get it into a tiddly little box?

Used to have a golden cocker spaniel called Izzy, short for Lady Isabella - the great Laxey wheel. I'm not really a dog person but she was very sweet and the kids absolutely adored her. Totally hatstand though.

Re: Man’s Best Friend
I had a collie/fox terrier cross named Trixie (god knows) That little mutt saw me through from about 4 years old to 13. She was also a great comfort to me when my mother died, but then the dog died too and I made the logical conclusion,it's best not to love anything because the fuckers die on you and it hurts.
I carried that defensive complex well into adulthood with obvious consequences regarding relationships. I let folk in so far, then held them at a distance.
Only mad people,or Yanks had therapy in those days.
Anyway,sorry for the TMI ramble,I haven't a dog or a mother since.

Re: Man’s Best Friend
A brace of Jack Russells for us. The one in front is the weirdest dog I've ever known. She's a veggie to start with, no honestly, she doesn't eat meat only dry food. We've had her about 10 years and she will still run away from us if we call her. She seems to be in a permanent state of anxiety and can be aggressive to other dogs because of it. My mate once said to me, it would be kinder to have let her go. I sometimes think he is right.
The one behind is 100% JRT. Willful, powerful little thing whose strength belies her size. Hates rodents and squirrels and will kill them if she can and has done. Not keen on cats either but they give our garden a wide berth because of her. If she is awake, she wants to be chasing something, be that a toy or any of the aforementioned. She is also bloody lovely and wraps the whole family round her little claw and is (ridiculously) spoilt with toys and dog treats.

Marley. Like a real dog but smaller.
Someone forgot to tell her she’s not 10 feet tall.

Jack
The nickname / slang name for Royal Navy ratings, I had a couple of years left before leaving the mob so I needed a Jack in my life.
His KC registered name is 'JackSickle'. He's a bit of a twat so we always said he's just like a proper Jack but smaller, - Ickle Jack
Ianto
I asked friends to name my puppy because I couldn't think of anything sensible and a mate came back with Ianto so that was it.
KC registered name is 'Ansum Ickle Ant' I really really wanted 'Antz in iz Pantz' but because of the special way that KC names work I couldn't include Pantz
Seren
our Son's dog, got her when he was 10 and he wanted to call her his star, so we agreed on Seren, Welsh for Star.
KC Name - 'That Thing Seren' because we were forever saying wtf is that thing doing now??????
Bronwen
Translation from Welsh - Fair (or white) chest and I've just realised that I don't have a lice picture of her.
the Wife's dog and Seren's older sister by a year, KC name -'The Unstable Sable' and my god is that thing unstable!!!

Re: Man’s Best Friend
Thanks for all the lovely (and some sad) doggie posts! I’m loving seeing them all. A cheery moment in the day.
Wheelnut - we have a couple of Dachshunds down the road from us, one smooth haired and one wire haired. The boy, Schubert, has a bark that can split your ear drum and he uses it, a lot!
Taff - do you run Jack dog agility competitions and has he won any? I’m thinking of the ones I’ve seen on Crufts.....
Silly Car - lovely dog what breed is he?
1888 - I hope your Jana can’t read! So very rude about her!

Re: Man’s Best Friend
Sorry to hear about your recent losses Chillit !
Here's our three . All rescues/rehomed . Luna ( Carpathian Shepherd dog , a Romanian rescue ) , about ten . Badger the Collie cross , the old boy at about 14 . Barney the white/tan border collie , also about 10 , my old agility dog . We tend to inherit their names ( unless there may be a good reason for changing it ).
