My Dad bought Conceptual Physics by Paul G. Hewitt (Second edition) in the 70s which I now have in box upstairs - looking well used. I'd read quite a bit of it before I was ten as it had a child friendly font and cartoon illustrations.
It had this one in it.

Re: We Often See What We Expect To See
It looks like a sofa to me. But then again, I have been to The Goodwood Anything But The Car breakfast meeting where you see motorised sofas and the like and I live in Brighton where you get used to seeing all kinds of unusual stuff on the highway (naked cyclists for a start). I love the unusual so I'm possibly always looking for it

Going? Nowhere Just 'borrowed' the earlier graphic and thought it mildly amusing but with an important point.

Re: We Often See What We Expect To See
I was driving down a country lane in the dark early in the morning, it was rather surprising how long it took me to work out that I wasn't seeing the road infront, just the foliage of a rather large tree completely blocking the road! And no, I didn't hit it.
