National Para-cycling success!
National Para-cycling success!
Hello everybody!
Apologies to Moth and Editor whoknow this story alreadybut otherwise ...:
Remember me?? I do not come on here so much since my life-threatening injuries way back on8th August 2012 when I crahe in a local Road Race here in Lincolnshire My wonderful consultant Neurgeon , Gerry O'Reilly, at /Hull Royal Infirmary told my wife Annika that I was unlikely to survive these injuries: A basal skull fracture, multiple brain haemorrhages, a subdural haematoma , fie broken rinbs and a punctured lung, plus the least of my problems a fracture collar bone. Gerry operated and basically saved my life. He placed me in an induced coma for 11 days after which was on the neurosurgical ard for four months. On eventual discharge in December, it was clear hat I could not work, in fact could barely stand unaided and you are not allowed to drive after such injuries in case of black-outs. I soon had to bite thebullet and get rid of my beloved |Triumph Sprint RS as my sense of balance was rather iffy, apart from my general mobility difficulties.
On being awoken from the coma Gerry was sat next to the bed and asked, "What am I like as a person?\\" "Stubborn I said, I do not give up easily.\good said \gerry, that is useful in his patients. Then, Whatt did I want to do in the future?! A simple questionI thought and replied, "All I wat to do is get back on my bike!" To my undying gratitude he did not say, don't be daft man, you cannot even stand up at the moment!" NO; Gerry said "Well i you want to get back on your bike, then I WILL GETYOU THERE!" what a great positive response to someone whose wife hd been told he probably will not live!! When I see him nowadays at check-ups etc., I tell him that he is officially my hero, but he just laughs out loud and credits his staff with doing the hard work! So verymodest as well as a great brain surgeon i.m.o!!
But by the following autiumn I completed a 60 miles supposedly non-competitive sportive around Lincoln and my clubmate said, "Blimey, Julian!" It is clearly gonna take more than thelittle matter of a fractured skull from stopping you trying to compete with everyone! I passed this on to Gerry and he just laughed again, saying, " Little Matter??!ou should be dead man!People do not survive your injuries! Buthere I am...!
Then jump forward to 2015 and I suffered a delayed effect by losing full-use of my left hand/arm and leg so applied to compete as a Para-cyclist. This was accepted and I've done okay ever since. Though 2017, my firt National championship I pulled out early after being undertaken by someone at great speed. Inearly effed ad blinded at the person for this risky manouevre but was gladI did not! Theycame up to me after the event to apologise and it was literlly cycing royalty! Dame arah Storey. SAhe aid that she could see me having trouble on my left side, had left a big gap so went throgh it!! Fair enough we paarted on good terms and I had pulled out 1/2 lap later anyway having difficulty with bike control on the very bumpy road at Sutton onnington!
\yhe next year at chester in 20217 was better whrn Iplaced 11t in my Para-category just out of the top ten. So Iimmediately had an objective for the next year: a top ten placing! In 2018 in Essex, I hit my target with 5th, the most satisfying race result of my cycle-racing life[ which started in August 1980!] Gerry was as pleased as I was hen we told him.
Then 2019 in Wals, the \brecon Beacons, a weebit hillier than Essex or Chester, I was top ten again with 6th. Move on to this yearnext due to COVID of course and I matched my Essex result with 5th near Bristol and Bath.
But better still on 23rd May, near Leicester I won the first round of the National time-trial Series. My first ever National-win.Moving on to the 10th October in Leeds for the final round of the Series, I won my category again so giving me a National Para-cycling Title for the Series this year.
I havejust featured in our local paperhere in HOrncastle Lics, that gives a good summary of the events leading to this...: Thanks for reading!

Re: National Para-cycling success!
I know I've commented a bit elsewhere, but I appear to be sitting in a VERY dusty room here!!
Bloody loved reading your post. So very happy for you. Long may the winning continue
And, from the article, this comment is something I've not seen/read before but one that totally resonates with me -
As I've said before - you (and others from various bike places) have been an inspiration to me. Very different injuries but for all life changing injuries you need the right mentality to continue. I've been lucky enough to have a number of people to look up to and take courage from. And you are right up there as a leading light of being positive and doing the best to continue with things you love, despite adversities!
Sending you hugest congrats on the National Para-cycling Title and huge hugs too xx

‘Though we are not now at that strength which in better days moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts made weak by time and fate but not in will;
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.’

Thank you H-man! I have a third one onin process at the moment. The start was easy and the ending is clear, where I am now, it is just the bit in the middle that's taking most time!! y own consultaant, Gerry O'Reilly suggested this. He has told me that my story is an inspiration to him and his other patients and being told that in turn inspires me to battle on! It was Gerry who said that Iought to write it down so hence, book three! Ihave the title: Nil Desperandum, = Never despair , which has been my atitude since Ihead-butted that kerbstone! He will be so chuffed with my wins this year, I should deicate them to him somehow!
Thanks again Horse for this mention. Cheers. VeryBest wishes to you and Yours. Syay safe and Well!!

Congrats on the successes - cycling and medical!
Doesn't look like Editor has visited here for a year. I'm still wearing the 'Holey Soles' he sold us umpteen years ago!

Re: National Para-cycling success!
Thanks Horse. The first book is Cows In Trees; the second is the Dog With the Head Transplant. First, I was indeed called to a cow stuck up a tall upright tree in Lancashire which for some reason we weren't taught about at University? When asked I explain about the breed in Lancashire that builds its nests in tall trees or else it was parachuting and got stuck on the way down! But nobody believes me?? Huh? As if I would lie about this?? I sent a complimentary copy to my former boss as a thank you for him being such a kind and supportive boss when I was still fairly inexperienced as a newish graduate. David telephoned to say thank you he had enjoyed it, laughed a lot as I had hoped, but then he added, Oh Julian, but you forgot tis one and reminded me of the case giving the second book its title, The Dog With the Head transplant! No spoilers re. the first one but the second one comes from this episode. When working in East Lancs. I neutered [ = speyed] a bloke's collie and when she came back after 10 days for stitch-removal the owner saw the other boss, Brian and complained that the dog looked completely different and that I must have transplanted a new head on without permission! Brian did not chuck the idiot out, but with a perfectly straight face he said, Well, tell you what! If you are still not happy with the new head in one month’s time we shall swap it back! Luckily the bloke agreed with this, ignoring the absurdity of the conversation and took the dog home sagain. We never saw the dog, nor the owner again thank goodness!
Apart from ridiculous cases like that, Most cases involved the usual domestic animals Dogs, Cats, Cattle, Sheep, Horses, even Pigs if I really had to, budgies, plus more exotic species like the Coatimundi at a Pet shop, a raccoon, a tarantula 20cm across with a broken leg, a swollen Boa Constrictor 3metres long, the tortoise aged 40 years with an unexpected pregnancy, plus in 1991, another tortoise aged 96 years almost with a “birth certificate!” The elderly lady brought in the tortoise and showed us a receipt inherited from her grandmother with the tortoise, the receipt being dated 1895 from Covent Garden Market and the price of 5 shillings! [= 25p in new money, Kids!!] Other tales include a show-jumping pig, sort of; an escaping cat, some dangerous dogs and several dogs with odd eating habits, swallowing carpet, curtains, socks, a toy soldier, a Mr Men figure, a taste in music; then some embarrassing black eyes inflicted on me and plenty more tales beside! Read and enjoy I hope?
Finally if anyone wishes to hear my presentation please just ask and it can be done. It lasts 40-50 minutes and I do not charge except maybe up to 5 or 10 quid for petrol? Locally I do he talk for nothing whento local groups around here, giving it for my own pleasure and the realisation that perhaps I did not waste my five years as a student in Liverpool after all and did achieve my dream career! If you are interested please FEEL FREE TO send me a Pm or e-mail if you can?
TIA.
Julian Earl a.k.a Hawker.

Re: National Para-cycling success!
Do you get money from Amazon if I download your books on Kindle Unlimited - I don't really like anecdote type books, but I'm happy to download them if you get some money from it.
As you live in Horncastle or nearby I could come and say hello when I'm at Cadwell.
