Should I be worried about Carbon Fibre "going off"
I need a new helmet. There's some lovely Carbon Fibre jobbies on ebay, retail at £399, being sold off as old stock for £109, manufactured in 2015.
Should I be worried?
Would you buy one ?

In theory...
If it's been kept in the box out of direct sunlight and never worn, it should be ok.
I'm too much of a helmet snob tho'

Yes, if they've been boxed. Probably less of a problem with age than other materials (IIRC). Main concern is why have they got a load of old/new helmets and where have they got them from? Surely they weren't that hard to sellJody wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:42 pm I need a new helmet. If they were any good, they'd have sold at full price. They got their fingers burnt, so flogging off cheap.

Sorry. Yes I'd buy a boxed, 5 year old carbon fibre lid if it I was happy with the other questions.Jody wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 7:13 pmYes I should be worried, or yes you'd buy one?Count Steer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 6:40 pmYes, if they've been boxed. Re: Should I be worried about Carbon Fibre "going off"
Plenty of airliners flying around with carbon fibre parts built in the 1980s or 1990s....there are plenty flying around with carbon fibre wings that are >5 years old now. It'll be UV and moisture which ultimately degrade them. So if it's been stored in a dark dry box, where's the issue? Even the UV isn't as bad as people think, CF is generally lacquered for that very reason.
Just FYI, even pretty pricy "carbon fibre" is actually often glass fibre with a single layer of carbon on the surface. Even stuff like McLarens and Ferraris' use big thick 'industrial' type stuff with a single layer of the typical carbon fibre looking stuff on the top. There's plenty of carbon fibre out there which is the equivalent of chinese cheese metal.

Don't know (but my house has a strong connection with the IoM)
Can't remember (I was only a child at the time).
What do I win?

FWIW - I would buy a 5 year old CFRP helmet, but I wouldn't have bought that one. It's an unspecified eBay thing that just smells a bit dodge.
