I am looking at getting some sort of home security system for my gaff. I want it to act as both a deterrent and to record any break ins - I would like it to cover a largish 4 victorian house - with an attached garage ( unlikely to be victorian) and also a workshop.
A couple of challenges :-

1) we have a dog - I don't want it going off every time he gets a case of the zoomies
2) The workshop is out of wifi range ( much to my annoyance - and I cannot get a mesh system or net plugs to work there)

Does anyone have any suggestions. Easy to set up and easy to use will be fairly high on the list due to some luddite tendencies in the household

For workshop cameras - an old mobile phone and the Alfred app could work and just use a data only sim.

If you have electric in workshop on same consumer box as house you could try a powerline plug.

Can you run a cat5 cable to the workshop and then have a wireless access point set up in there maybe..?

With pets you are going to have to limit movement to a non critical room when alarm isn't set to avoid motion sensors getting tripped or you could use a smart camera and when you get notified of your alarm going off you can open up your camera app on your phone and see if the dog is going nuts and reset alarm if needs be.

I would recommend the guys who did ours but I'm in Yorkshire.

A simple garage / shed system is to use a mains baby monitor.

It's all wired and the cables are long and you can get extensions. It records on a week long loop. You can set up alerts but I turned them off pretty quickly as it's extremely difficult to get the sensitivity right.

I also fitted a ring door bell which is excellent but only covers the front.

This was all in response to two lads forcing my garage door at 8pm trying to steal my bikes.

Before going to cloud, we used Samsung CCTV systems.
4 camera, notifications, great app with remote viewing, etc.
Loads of extension cables available which we got to go from garage to house, upstairs, etc.
Have 2x of them sitting in their boxes which cover about a month on loop at 1080P.
