Demo ride, KTM 790 Duke...
Ended up at Premier Bikes on my lunch break today and chatting with Darren the sales manager about stuff.
We discussed 890Rs, we discussed 690 SMC-Rs and eventually the 790 Duke.
Sadly (in some ways) the 890R isn't working for me in terms of price, I did think about the ex-demo which was low miles, but neither the new bike nor the demo come with the Quickshifter and track stuff enabled, which is a disappointment as well as a financial stumbling point. So i thought "why not jump on a 790 Duke for a test"
To say i was a little underwhelmed is a bit of an understatement.
The engine felt somewhat 'flat' and didn't really excite... Coming off the CP3 engine i was expecting 'more' from the 790, more grunt, more go... Of course once you get going it cracks on nicely. But it was the getting going that was a bit of a damp squib for me.
The brakes on the 790 also disappointed.... i know they're only a decent set of pads away from being great, but they're a bit of a letdown as standard.
The QS and blipper were great though, really impressed, both with them and the burble of the engine on the over-run, that was NICE too....a lovely noise it makes.
Handling was sharp and precise but not too harsh, not as plush as the Honda last week, but still, nice enough. But blow me was the seat uncomfortable !!!
LEts just say, all in all, i wasn't disappointed to get back on the XSR900, not even a tiny bit

Re: Demo ride, KTM 790 Duke...
I think as riders we grow, change, go in and out of cycles, in and out of bikes. At the time i owned one i had come from the 690 and i thought the 790 was great... but now i've been riding the XSR, maybe it's changed my tastes, wants, desires, dunno.... but overall it's well, a little disappointing. I opened the throttle and expected a full on 'wham'.... i got... well, less than that.
Hate is a strong word.... but it certainly cemented any thought of owning one again.

Without being rude, you were becoming a bit obsessed with KTMs.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 2:09 pmI think as riders we grow, change, go in and out of cycles, in and out of bikes. Glad you've broken the orange myth.

Good, glad you got it out of your system (for the time being at least).
I'm considering a 790 ADV. I enjoyed the 790 but I think the ADV would suit my needs better.
Premier sell Triumph these days, I think you should try out a Speed triple 1050 and see what you think.

I still don't 'get' Triumphs... None of the ones I've ridden have ever really shown me anything i want.

Which is why you should try a Speed Triple. Actually, you might like the speed Twin too (same a Nidge bought)

Did you "get" Yamaha before this one rocked up to be your longest serving bike for many years?
(Genuine question - I wasn't about when it arrived).

Re: Demo ride, KTM 790 Duke...
You've got to remember.. Whilst i may have owned a lot of KTMs in recent times, i've owned lots and lots of bikes, i've actually owned more Yamahas than KTMs and about the same Ducatis as i have KTMs too.
It was only in the last 10 years i became a KTM fanboi and that's because i loved how many of them rode, although not all as i've tried and disliked a few KTMs.
Yamahas have been R1s, R6s, XT660x's and the odd Thundercat...
I'm not really against many manufacturers, only really Triumph and BMW... Triumph i've tried 4-5 and didn't like any of them, BMWs i've only tried one and that was just perculiar
The main reason i've often stayed away from Yamaha is the same reason I don't own Suzuki, Kawasaki or Honda... it's IL4 engines. I know they've got their place, but not in my world generally. So the CP3 engine in the XSR900, once i'd tried it, i was sold instantly... The looks/shape/styling already sold itself to me, it was just a question of whether i got on with the engine on it.

Re: Demo ride, KTM 790 Duke...
I completely get why you like the XSR. I've been a fan since they landed - but then I come from liking (and owning) Triumph triples so it's always been a bit of a mystery to me since you've got the XSR why you haven't considered them, especially as a few of your chums on here either have them/have had them and enjoyed them.
I really enjoyed your "eye opening" review of the Honda as well for the same reason.
I'm completely with you on BMWs though - I've ridden a few (and grew up as a pillion on my Dad's R twin) and just don't get it at all.

Re: Demo ride, KTM 790 Duke...
In all my years riding bikes, I think the only Triumphs I've ridden have been an early 955(?) Speed Triple and the 765RS, both owned by @Tricky .
Liked both but, compared the the RSVR I was riding at the time, the old ST was just too soft - loved the engine even if it didn't have the grunt of the Mille.
The 765RS I rode for one session at Cadwell last month and loved it. On track it was ideal for an old wobbler like me and the QS/Blipper was like witchcraft compared to my very analogue but very capable 954 Blade.
I shall be riding it on the road shortly to see how it is in real life and we'll see where that takes us...........
Pembrey maybe?
If it isn't what I expect I plan to try it's bigger brother, not the new 1200RS, but, as suggested by GP, the 1050 - again in the RS flavour as the bling appeals to me.
Whatever, I'll have to consider selling something soon to accommodate any further purchase but I've said that many times already

I suspect I'd probably like a Street Triple, but....dunno I feel nothing for Triumphs at all. Just never consider them.

Re: Demo ride, KTM 790 Duke...
I've only ridden the Adv but I found that like the 690 the 790 wants revs. It spun up fast, but you needed to keep it on the boil. Reminded me of a 690 in bigger trousers which is what it is I guess.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 1:40 pm The engine felt somewhat 'flat' and didn't really excite... But it was the getting going that was a bit of a damp squib for me.
In comparison the the XSR has bags of torque and wheel lofting shove everywhere in the midrange.
Re: Demo ride, KTM 790 Duke...
I took a 790 demonstrator out a couple of years ago, partly because of your experiences. I thought it handled and braked really well but it lacked some grunt, but then I had a 990 Brutale at the time.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 2:09 pm

As for Triumphs, I like Speed Triples, I'm on my third one atm. You say your experiences with the XSR have changed your tastes and desires. Take a 1050 out for a morning, approach it with an open mind and if you still don't like it what have you lost. As least you won't get asked about the box by the steering head :p
