Basically the LAPD tried to 'safely' explode a load of IEDs within their 'controlled-explosions-truck', and levelled half a street.

I'm struggling to understand the concept of this truck.

So, they have a truck that is so super-safe that they trust it completely to handle setting off a massive explosion inside it, but not enough to actually drive the fucking thing away from a residential street?

That's not that much trust, is it?

UPDATE/CORRECTION: To clarify, it wasn’t the bulk of the fireworks themselves that caused the catastrophic explosion, but rather improvised explosives—40 soda can-sized ones, and 200 smaller ones.

According to the LA Times, less than 10 pounds of these explosions were detonated in the truck:

Less than 10 pounds of the devices were transferred into a semitruck, which Moore said was rated, with its outer containment shell, to handle 18 pounds.

There are conflicting reports, this morning they mentioned there could have been 40lb inside it. They found the door in someones back yard two street away. some parts were found 1/4 mile away.
The large cloud of white smoke makes me think it was tannerite.

Twelve families are now staying at local hotels.

They've bought out the special red crime scene tape as well as the usual yellow..

The perp made bail last night, then got his collar felt by the ATF earlier today... Now he's being charged with possession of 32,000lb of fireworks/explosives.

It's still making news. There was a meeting between the cops & the (extremely pissed off) residents today. It got a bit nasty.

They mentioned that so far there have been 160 claims against the LAPD for damage from the blast
