Mushroom Plugs

Post by Ditchfinder »

Managed to pick up a screw in the rear tyre yesterday - luckily only a small. Local mechanic thinks a mushroom plug repair should be OK. It's in the middle of the rear tyre ( which is only 200 miles old). :angry-cussingblack:

Any of you guys used mushroom plugs before? Do you trust them?

I have to say I still use the old fashioned diy sticky strip stuff because it's easy.

I had a mech install a mushroom plug in the distant past though because (he said) it was better.

A mushroom plug fitted from the inside?
Then yes, no problem if the hole is in the middle and not at an acute angle.

Fitted by a decent mech, yes, it'll outlast the tyre. I've had exactly the same happen and plugs fitted with no issues at all.

I've carried one of these for a good while, good enough to get you out of a hole. (ha)

After not having a puncture for years,I had two on a new bike, one at only 260 miles. I had the tyre repaired twice with no qualms.

I got a puncture about half a mile from getting a new tyre fitted, limped back to the shop and they plugged it, lasted the life of the tyre.

The Stop & Go kit has got me out of trouble a couple of times though I have always got a proper job done after. Just as well as according to FortNine they're shit.

In the real world, what scenario would push the plugs back into the tyre with that force. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I had a puncture on the ferry in a brand new rear tyre, ridden from home to the port 80 ish miles. Fortunately a mate had a DIY mushroom kit and air cannisters with him which was enough to get to a French motorcyle tyre spot. I got a new tyre fitted. We were at the start of a 2000+ holiday including fast motorways and the length of the Pyrenees backwards and forward over the passes. I didn't want the thought of my roadside repair on my mind.

However last week I got a screw in a fairly new car tyre I had that done professionaly with in plug from the inside and thats been fine so far (about 200 miles).

The guy did a tyre off big mushroom patch, glue on the patch and the stem. After 3 commutes to work I'm not dead yet :-)
