Remco Evenepoel – much has been said and written about the youngster racing the Giro, believe me, he’s not here to make up the numbers. Yes, he hasn’t raced since crashing in August, but with a large training block under his belt he’ll be ready to battle with the best. Remember that Remco isn’t just a brilliant climber, he’s also exceptional on his TT bike. In 2020 he raced in two TTs, winning both. Despite his lack of racing, this is a massive chance to claim a stage win in his very first grand tour outing, that would be pretty special.

Rémi Cavagna – the form pick. After second places in Paris-Nice and Catalunya, he eventually got his first big TT win in Romandie. The Frenchman is currently enjoying a purple period, and form counts for an awful lot in this sport. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him in pink at the end of the day.

Pippo Ganna – what’s going on with the big man? He ended 2020 in sensational form on his TT bike, he then started 2021 in a similar vein. It looked like we were all set for a long period of domination, but suddenly, he’s had a crisis of confidence and form. He was 3rd in Tirreno, beaten by Van Aert and Küng, but we put that down to a bad day. He was then 9th in the prologue in Romandie, but there was a tough climb in that one. Then he was 10th in the final TT, even though he had a dry run. No more excuses for Ganna, the signs are there for all to see. How does someone go from being untouchable to easily beaten in just a couple of months? Form is everything, and he doesn’t have it just now.

Paddy Bevin – always there or there abouts, he really is Mr Consistent on his TT bike. He’ll finish in the top 10, maybe the top 5 on a really good day.

João Almeida – can I call him the dark horse for the stage? Probably not considering he was 2nd in the opening TT last year and he’s finished in the top 10 in his last six TTs. He can really shift on his TT bike, but can he beat his teammates?

Victor Campenaerts – 2021 has seen him looking to try his hand in the classics, that experiment didn’t go too well. On his day he’s one of the best TT riders in the world, but that day seems to come around as often as a leap year.

Jan Tratnik – another solid top 10 candidate.

Edoardo Affini – if you are looking for an upset, look no further. The Italian has always been a very strong TT rider, and now he’s with one of the best teams in the world. Jumbo-Visma’s move to Cervélo bikes has been successful, the new bike looks fast. Affini can surprise, you have been warned.

Ganna with a powerful performance for the win today.

All the main GC contenders about where you expect, only a few seconds between them.

Ganna was a beast out there

Just catching up on stage 1 and 2 tonight so will be interesting to see who and where the team leaders and back up are .....Stage 1 as a TT is irrelevant for the GC.

Bernal has never really convinced me as a true team leader despite his Tour de France win as i thought he won that one by default from Geraint Thomas

Yeah i'm inclined to agree with you, he's always a day away from blowing up with an issue. But then again, so are most of them in some ways, think of Yates for example, Quintana, even Roglic. But your Roglic, Pogacar and the other Elites generally do it week in week out... Bernal does seem a bit flakey at times.

Bit more lumpy today and with the weather seeming to be horrible for it, it's going to be a battle out there.

Haven't been here for a few days so just dropping in to say.... I love a good solo breakaway win. One of those things that doesn't happen so often it gets boring.

Sagan's positioning in sprints hasn't been great for some time, and he seems to have lost that top edge of power that allows it not to matter when his positioning is off. We'll see!

I think he completely screwed up the one the other day that Ewan won, but he's there or thereabouts every time which i think will take him to the points jersey again, he doesn't seem to have bad days like some of the others and he's for sure a better climber than most of the other fast boys.

Today's was an interesting one to rewatch a couple of times based on our discussion here.

800m to go he was there and thereabouts (and Oss following wasn't a bad move as at that point it gives him no reason to chase), but then got swamped and before you know it it's kicking off up front and he is boxed in having to try and go the long way around at first, but is either unwilling or unable, then tries the inside and it nearly ends in tears.

Giving the distance Ewan had to do 95% before cranking it up to 110% it shows the difference between them at the mo, even if he'd had a clearer run I don't think he'd have got a sniff in.

Ewan is leaving early to go to the tour, can't wait for those sprints either.

Today was the strongest i have seen Bernal ride since his TdF win ...impressive riding by him and the entire Ineos team to pace back a 2 min 30 deficit to the breakaway over the last few km. The other teams dont seem to be firing on all cylinders and the doubtful side of me thinks they have kept their A riders for the TdF to challenge there more.

Its still early days in the grand scheme and Ineos have put all their eggs in the Bernal basket since they lost Sivakov a few days ago after his bad crash. I am still not convinced Bernal can last the entire Giro but happy to be proved wrong as all his "not sure how my back will hold up" might be smoke and mirrors ;)
