£355 for RST airbag leather jacket

In case anyone is airbag-curious, MotoCentral is currently offering the airbag-equipped RST GT leather jacket for £355 (in sizes 50 and below). It seems like a mega-bargain for a leather jacket with an electronic airbag!

Beginning of 2020 I purchased an RST airbag suit, having had a couple of their suits previously and being attracted by the price and safety features. The cut is slightly different to those I'd had before and it's a bit heavier than most other suits due to the airbag and related equipment installed. Other than that, at under £800, all good.

Fast forward to October 2020 and I was, unfortunately, caught up in someone else's crash at Donington, racing with No Limits. It was a very slow speed off as I almost managed to stop before my front wheel hit another bike and I tipped off. The airbag didn't deploy, which I thought was due to the low speed at which I was travelling (I'd estimate 10-15mph). I did, however, break my collarbone quite badly so that was a bit of an irritation. The suit was pretty much unscathed, so I dusted it off and packed it away while I recovered.

Yesterday evening I decided to charge the battery, connect to the app and make sure it was all working properly before I use it at Donington next week. The app wouldn't recognise the canister so I removed it and, comparing it to the spare one I have, I could see that the canister had been deployed. I tried manually inflating the airbag with the adaptor supplied and had no success. I removed the airbag and discovered that it was torn, a bit like a burst balloon, up near the neck area where it would be 'protected' by the hump. There was some scorching around the tear too. From further research it appears that instead of inflating the airbag, the force of the canister deploying has torn the airbag, hence its non-inflation.

It's away back to RST now, I'll update the thread with their findings. I don't want to say too much, but I'll be very disappointed if I find out that my broken collarbone could have been avoided if the airbag had worked properly, although I do understand that they're not specifically designed to prevent that sort of injury.

In the meantime, make sure you check that your airbag is functioning properly if you've had even the slightest tumble.
