Supposed to fit a new chain to my bike today but for the life of me I can't find my chain tool. It's been so long since I fitted a chain I'm not acually sure I ever had one lol! So, I need a one, not an expensive professional one, just one capable of doing a good job like the Del Boys Garage video.

Use a grinder on the pins of the old chain, to remove it.
Just the ball end of a hammer or a suitable drift on the soft link. Or fit a split link and take it to someone who will fit your soft link for a few quid.

I have peen'd them over before, but thought I bought a proper tool? The more I think about it, the more i'm sure I didn't and did exactly what you said as I have this memory of someone clumping the riveting tool!

Last time I did one, I did everything but the last bit and a mate came over and used two hammers to 'peen' (??) the edges of something!! LOL Would be far happier with a tool that just does it. And currently don't know anyone/any shops here to ask to do it for me

Some advice: don't use a cheap chain riveter to try to break the pins on your old chain. I used the Sealey VS779 today. I was impressed as it did exactly what its supposed to do and worked like it said in the Sealey video. Being picky I could say it's a tad fiddly lining up the bits over the pins to put the side plate on, but not the end of the world. Certainly easier and more accurate than my club and ball peen hammers!

I always put a 12mm nut over the pins once it's all assembled & give the link a squeeze with Molegrips to seat the plate before employing the tool to deform the end of the pin.
The kit I have is 100% identical to the Sealey, but with a different name. Who actually makes it?
