Car thread - toyota avensis 2007 2.0 d4d starting issues
150K on the clock, never had any issues until the last couple of days. Strong battery and it cranks over as it should but the last few mornings it either starts and then stops straight away meaning you have to give it 2 or 3 attempts to get it running OR it takes a good 5 to 6 seconds cranking over before it fires up. Once running it's fine for the rest of the day on multiple journeys.
Water in the diesel? Airlock in the fuel system? Glow plugs? I don't know a lot about modern diesels, more comfortable with old plant.

I know little of diesels despite owning one, could it be connected to this?

Edit, there's a bit at the bottom about other systems you may have.

I'd say air in the fuel system.
Probably leaking at the fuel filter, when was the last time it was changed?
Is there a manual priming bulb, if you give it a few squeezes before you turn the key does it start any better?

Re: Car thread - toyota avensis 2007 2.0 d4d starting issues
No fuel leaks to be seen and a quick Google seems to indicate failing glow plugs.
I hate working on modern engines. Half the job usually seems to be removing covers etc.
The glow plugs however are very easy to get to. My local motor factor has them in stock and I'll be swapping them out after lunch. Fingers crossed it's a £100 fix.

At least it's Direct Injection and not common-rail. The plugs look easy to get to, I've seen some where the fuel pump is in the way of one of them.
I hope you've got a slide hammer

Being a lazy tight wad I'd be disconnecting and checking each one and only doing the failed ones.

I'd be checking the supply to the plugs first.

Indeed. They'll have their own relay, which isn't unknown to go wrong.

Every single XUD/DW8 engine ever made has the original #3 in it.

All glow plugs changed. Still not starting properly though. I starts every time, but stalls instantly and the it takes a good 10s of cranking before it catches and runs properly. This is only the first time it's started each day, morning or afternoon. Must be the pump or fuel system I reckon.

Has anyone mentioned an air leak in the fuel system?

When i had a dodgy fuel pump (petrol) starting was never a problem, it would slow down going up long hills but most of the time wasn't noticeable.
