ON-ROAD COURSES & ONLINE COACHING - resuming MON 29th MARCH
ON-ROAD COURSES
Confidence: BUILDER one-day course: New or returning rider? Changing to a different style of bike? Riding in a new environment? Got a specific problem? Suffering a loss-of-confidence after a crash? This is the course for you. We can pick up where basic training left off, get you used to the new machine, build up your weak areas, or rebuild confidence after a spill. You name it -the Confidence: BUILDER is all about YOUR needs so let's make a date for a frank chat about just what this course can do for you.
Ride2Work one- or two-day course: It's the New Normal. Many of us are looking at two wheels as a means of getting to work for the foreseeable future. But staying safe by avoiding public transport shouldn't mean taking risks on the roads. Drawing on my courier experience I've developed the Ride2Work courses that offer the skills needed to survive on everything from city centres to motorways. Coaching in filtering, collision avoidance techniques and slow riding all help you develop a go-anywhere, do-anything skill set.
Ride4Fun one-or two-day course: Many of us enjoy the freedom that motorcycling brings. The Ride4Fun courses will develop your twisty road technique to a new level. Start with the basics - hazard perception, risk awareness and risk management. Add some machine control - steering, brakes and throttle. Then ride the right line - the unique blend of 'reference points', positioning and lines. Put together that's the Survival Skills 'Point & Squirt' system - a uniquely different approach to planned cornering.
One2One online 60 minute sessions: We've got used to working from home, now it's time to learn from home. Your riding coach, Kevin Williams, is not just a BTEC-qualified advanced motorcycle trainer, but also a qualified online tutor with an NVQ in Distance Learning. Kevin has delivered advice via email and bike forums for years. Now you too can take advantage of that experience via inexpensive 1:1 online coaching sessions, webinars and videos.

Re: ON-ROAD COURSES & ONLINE COACHING - resuming MON 29th MARCH
Back on the road...at last!
I ran my first course since early November on Easter Saturday, taking Yamini out for a 'Riding: REFRESHER'. We took a very mixed route, including suburban roads around Greenford in West London, then out along the A40 followed by a stretch of M40 (a clean bill of health on those roads).
Then we headed off to the fun back roads between Berkhampstead and Taplow to work on her cornering confidence. Her first run wasn't bad but a bit hesitant and a little erratic in terms of machine control inputs approaching corners.
Although we'd covered much of the material about how to 'read' corners including why road signs are where they are and what they tell us during our pre-session Zoom briefing, we stopped for a short chat to talk about exactly HOW to apply them.
I also mentioned my "secret" * 'tell the time' tip for judging the sharpness of a bend. The closer the 'time' is to 3am or 9pm, the sharper the corner.
Then I reminded her of the 'slow upright, back on the throttle upright, counter-steer on a steady throttle, accelerate upright' approach to machine inputs round bends.
And finally, we rode back the way we'd come whilst I demo'd everything!
It's always great to see a nervous grin turn into a happy smile. And that was exactly what I saw when we stopped again.

Even following me had made a difference.
"Suddenly I had confidence I knew how tight the bend was."
She said that the magic bullet for her was the 'tell the time' tip.
We turned round again and she was able to ride back over the same section. The hesitancy was gone and in came a totally different, and smooth rider.
"That's the first time I've truly enjoyed riding the bike in over two years".
That's my kind of result from a training course.
I'd love to show you a short video clip to promote my training courses... but unfortunately, I cleaned the interior of my on-bike camera case, and put a thin smear of silicone sealant on the waterproof gasket.
Unfortunately, it seems I sealed the camera in TOO well.
Having popped it in the case in the house, then carried it outside and attached it to the bike in the MUCH colder air (it was only about 7c when I set off and I don't think it got much warmer), the moist air condensed and fogged up the lens for the entire 150 minutes of the ride!
Never mind, I'll get some video from her follow-up session! I'll just make sure that I put the camera in the case OUTSIDE so the air inside is the same temperature.
* It's not really a secret... you just won't find it in any of the books - 'Essential Skills' 'Motorcycle Roadcraft' or any of the IAM's books!

Been a long - and unnecessarily delayed - return to work for. Bit of a bugger the weather has done a downturn.
Hope it all works out!

Re: ON-ROAD COURSES & ONLINE COACHING - resuming MON 29th MARCH
Last spring was the best and warmest for ages... under normal circumstances I would have had courses booked up for weeks...
So, hoping that the weather is fine this year too. I could definitely do with rather fewer snow flurries than we had this morning
