About Survival Skills Rider Training

Post by The Spin Doctor »

Old forum hands will know who I am, but for those who are new here, here's a bit of background.

RIDER TRAINING FOR THE 21st CENTURY
Survival Skills - advanced rider training with a twist. Based in SE England, Survival Skills Rider Training is is a post-test motorcycle training school and dedicated to improving motorcycle rider skills, established and run by BTEC-qualified advanced instructor Kevin Williams since 1997.

I have over thirty years experience as a professional motorcyclist, first as a courier then as a rider trainer. As well as delivering advanced training, I spent over a decade working with CBT and DAS training. I have worked with approaching five thousand riders of all ages and abilities from newly qualified to police licence holders, including many from the IAM and RoSPA, riding everything from Harleys to Hondas. My courses are available at a number of easy-to-reach locations around the M25, and I also run courses at other locations such as Oxford, Devon and Wales on occasion.

If you’re ready to move your riding up to another level, look no further than a Survival Skills training course.

AUTHORING
I publish a series of books on riding technique for all standards of rider from novice to advanced - order from my author page: http://lulu.com/spotlight/SurvivalSkills

ONLINE COACHING
I am also an NVQ-qualified 'e-tutor' with extensive experience in delivering coaching and training via distance learning and social media which has made it relatively easy to adapt my on-road courses to maximise social distancing by using online resources.

CONTRACT WORK
I have worked with Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) on their 'Ride Skills' rider safety project at Brands Hatch until 2019 - sadly, the 2020 dates were cancelled. Prior to that, I worked on rider safety projects as an approved rider trainer with Bucks county council and Somerset Road Safety Partnership as a theory coach on their rider skills days at Castle Coombe.

In 2019, I was contracted as a consultant into a study into rider training schemes for the Transport Research Laboratory.

I also researched and story-boarded the 'Lucky 13' cartoon series for the European Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (ACEM) in the mid 2000s. The cartoons were translated into a dozen different languages and ran all over Europe.

SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN
In the winter of 2011, I first developed the 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) presentation for KFRS to be used as the third 'proactive safety' module for the pilot 'Biker Down' first aid and accident scene management courses then being developed. I was one of the KFRS Biker Down team that won an international Prince Michael of Kent Road Safety Award in 2012 and an insurance industry award the following year. Biker Down is now run by over half the fire services in the UK as well as the UK military and many teams use a version of my presentation. Biker Down has also gone international and I'm currently in negotiation over the use of SOBS as part of Biker Down North America.

In 2018 and 2019 I took SOBS out to New Zealand as a keynote speaker for the NZ Department of Transport on their 'Shiny Side Up' events, delivering the talk to bikers at fifteen different venues in 2019. I was invited back again in 2021, but due to the coronavirus restrictions my presentation was delivered via Zoom.

As well as going out to groups and clubs, SOBS has also been delivered as part of an online symposium in the US in 2020 and as part of the Road Safety GB online powered two wheeler safety event in March 2021.
