Big occasion this week.
Tensioner mod time. Should arrive in the mail today & will get fitted this week.
The big occasion being taking the clutch cover off the ZRX for the first time since it left the factory 22 years & 119,187.3 miles ago.
Well, assuming I can get the damn thing off... but there is a trick: hammer handle down the oil filler hole & give it a tug.
Actually have a couple of clutch cover gaskets in my main toolbox since I bought them in 2005.
Was a tad paranoid riding yesterday as it would be just my luck to have no issues with the tensioner for 22 years & then have the bloody thing let go after I ordered the mod & before it actually got here.

Re: Big occasion this week.
Why does the tensioner mod require the clutch cover off?

It's the starter/alternator chain, not the cam chain:

Re: Big occasion this week.
Is that a common thing with the ZRX?

Re: Big occasion this week.
Fits all engines in this series from the '84 GPz750/900R onwards, so Connie/GTR, Elimnator, ZX10, ZX11, ZRX11, ZRX12, ZZR12, GPz11 (the later version) etc etc.
There's another mod where you can fit the slipper clutch from the Connie/GTR, but I'm not even going to bother looking at the clutch plates while I'm in there. (unless curiosity gets the better of me)

Re: Big occasion this week.
Not common, but not exactly rare either.
Compton's version looks like it was made in a machine shop (because it was), the other popular version looks like it was cobbled together from crap bought at Home Depot & loses the automatic tension ability.

With 120,000 miles on it I'd put a set of friction plates in the clutch while it's apart

Re: Big occasion this week.
Doodad arrived from Texas. Only bloodshed so far was removing the rubber waffle bolted to the inside of the clutch cover owing to the edge of the cover being like a frigging razor. Been hearing horror stories & dire warnings about getting the cover off the engine. It popped right off with two taps at the front with a rubber mallet, hammer handle in the oil filler hole & a simple tug had sitting on the floor.

Re: Big occasion this week.
Waiting on the compressor to fill the tank so I can use the whizzwheel to remove the pin.

Well crap. The PingFuckit! is the wrong size for the pin. I can push it in place with a fingernail & it fell off when I picked up the tensioner.
They're sending a couple of others in the mail today, just spent 20 minutes getting a bit of an suspension education from Jimmy Compton

Re: Big occasion this week.
On a semi-related note.
I've been looking on UK t'bay, the ZRX-R's are 50% more expensive than the ZRX-S', same miles/year.
I've also been googling the difference between the S and the R.
It seems you can convert an S to an R using 2nd bits for a few hundred quid, if you don't mind using the S clocks with the R's bikini fairing.
What's that all about then?

Re: Big occasion this week.
A mate has an S he's turning into an R, but I think he's given up on trying to buy the fairing bracket and is going to make one.

Re: Big occasion this week.
So here's what happened...
Wasn't 100% sure about my elbow calibration so decided I best buy something to check.
Today this showed up:
https://www.lexivon.com/products/lx-181
As suspected the two bolts that mount the tensioner weren't tight enough & now they're EXACTLY 87 in/lb & I have a spiffy new tool, this brings my torque wrench collection to five.
