Bought racking for the garage.

Post by gremlin »

I currently have a plethora of London brackets holding up various bits of wood and masquerading as garage shelves. One day it will collapse until I get myshelf together (see what I did there?).

Due to piers, pipes etc in the garage, I'm limited in where i can put racking, but I have a wall I can free up just a smidgen over 2400mm wide. I found these on the web: https://www.bigdug.co.uk/shelving-c4505 ... unit-p1304

No love for the colour or anything, just they come in 1200mm wide units, which fits my gap nicely.

Any opinions one way or the other? Nothing particularly weighty going on the them, just usual garage crap like tins of paint, bottles of whatjacallit, few thingameebobs, etc.

Any other suppliers recommended?

I had 4 of them jobbies (or similar) in my garage in Thame. Very good. I fixed them to the wall.

I recently had the same thought. After returning some terrible cheap metal shelves I bought some of these, they are shelves and haven't collapsed yet so meh.

Not As strong as metal but I'm just putting a few tool boxes on them and these won't rust.

Mrs.Skub bought a load of those for underneath/cellar in our house. I was a production line operative for most of a day.

They seemed strong and stable enough once the wooden shelf is in place. I reckon they could take more weight than you'd think at first.

Mines really sturdy.

There's some weight on that middle shelf with all those fluids.

We’ve got something very similar, as has been said, bolt them to the wall as that stiffens them up no end.

Once mine are in the garage rather than dining room / dumping ground / workshop, I’ll bolt the shelf boards to cross braces and bolt / rivet the lot together as a single unit.

I tested some that 'looked really sturdy' by using them as an impromptu ladder. Not that successful. They really do mean it when they say 50kg limit per shelf.

But it turns out smacking it with a big hammer makes it nearly serviceable again.

I'd be minded to replace the MDF with plywood of a similar thickness, partly because it's stronger but mostly because I dislike MDF.

It's a temporary arrangement. Has been for the last 12 years.

I've used quite a few of them at work and in my garage, they're good for the money, easy to assemble and take more weight than you expect. Screw them to the wall for top rigidity, or if fitting a couple side by side bolt them together.
If anybody needs the 900mm wide version (900 x 450 x 1800mm high) Screwfix do an almost identical version for not much money

I've got some similar.

I remember when I was thinking about them Big Pete was fairly disparaging.

I don't think they'd hold a fraction of the weight they claim and even partially loaded if you catch an upright it could bring the whole lot tumbling down.

That said I have three or four sets and they're ok. And cheap, which was why I got them.

The PAWG is moving into her new house soon and I'll probably get her some for her garage.

When I was looking for shelving for a cupboard in my flat to put stock for my website on I went to a local shop fitters who had a massive warehouse filled with bits and pieces.

I got second hand shelves that you could have sat a car on for not much money. And as a bonus when I moved they were easily sold.

Maybe you’ve got something like that near you.

I have Whalen brand.

Mine are the older version with 1/2in thick shelves, now it's somewhat thinner. Strong enough to support a C6 transmission.
