Guzzi Stelvio?

Post by Asian Boss »

Today's whim is a Stelvio.

I know they're not as quick as a KTM or BMW but I like the looks of the MK1 model. And they probably have nice mid corner stability. A local-ish dealer has a nice looking one in red. And shaft drive! Ideal for a nasty old bastard like me.

Any thoughts / experience?

Didn't someone have one, Gedge maybe?

Is that 8v Guzzi engine a hand grenade / big bill waiting to happen?

I thought about chopping my V7 in for one, I think they're pretty solid from the research I did.

They're really ugly in a cool way.

I think it was Adamski that had one.

I think the 8v engines need to be a rollerised to stop them being grenades. Pete roper on grisoghetto.com is the man to ask.

It's similar to the griso in terms of engine and transmission and the fact that head bearings and swingarm / linkages rarely had any grease out of the factory.

I have the 4v engine in my griso and its lovely in the low and mid range, the 8v is supposed to be a league ahead in both and has top end too

Lovely bikes. The early 8v engines with flat tappets were grenades, but the later ones had roller followers, and are fine. The early ones should have been converted with the factory kit which Guzzi supplied at no charge if you could show a full service history. They have pretty much all been done - but do check, because a flat tappet 8v WILL fail.

I'm in two minds now....

It sounds like the one to go for it the post 2011 model. But they don't look so good IMO. Maybe I'm over analysing....?

Get a nice Varadero instead.

The later ones (2010+) have slightly slimmer bodywork to make them look less weighty. Good motor tho'

Old Homda's never go wrong.

I think I did the press launch of the 2003 FI 6 speed version. It was a James Bond themed launch complete with saucy models on CR250s, helicopters, private planes and abseiling out of old towers. I was never that taken by the bike though, far from it if truth be told. I'm sure it nearly hoyed Brown Roland on his arse. Good suggestion but not for me I'm afraid.

I think my mate used to rent a room from him in Kettering, or am I thinking of a different gayer?

I liked my 2005 Varadero, it was big and heavy, but the motor was lovely and it was oh so comfortable.

Surely they have the CCTs of doom like the Firestorm? Fit manual ones I guess

They don't seem to have the CCT issues the Storm has, but then I'm not sure they're actually a problem on the storm either, just paranoid owners.

I don't know where he lived and I'm not sure he was gay.

I think I have some weird fondness for mid corner stability which the Js rarely seem to nail .. NC30 and RC30 aside. I'm sure the Varadero is a good bike but it's not what I'm after at the moment.

I've always liked Guzzis,though I've never owned one,however I don't like adventure bikes and I can't see past that.

You should probably just buy a Multistrada or a GS like everyone else.
