Triumph Street Scrambler 900 2017 Thoughts please...

One of the young guys in work has been talking about getting one of these. He’s due to do his DAS in June if it goes ahead and he’s got his heart set on one of these scramblers. He asked me what I thought, but it’s not my kind of bike and I’ve never had a Triumph so I thought I’d ask the RTTL community on his behalf.

My first thoughts were £7k on your first bike??? Seems a bit much for me, but I’m tighter than two coats of paint.

Anybody own one or owned one in the past?

Cheers

Like this?

They may be 900cc, but they're not very powerful and weigh a fair bit, so he'll not get too many speeding tickets.

They certainly look the part.

Yeah that’s one,
He’s definitely not going to be buying a fire blade or a busa any time soon, I don’t think he’s got much interest in going fast. It’s just what he likes the look of. What do you reckon would be other options in the same vain?

This is the one he sent me. I just found a great bike on Auto Trader:

The next closest thing is the Guzzi Stornello...

Or maybe slightly less retro, the Ducati Scambler.

and if he's got no interest in going fast at all...

I like the green framed ones.

Those Ducati’s look much better value for money than the triumphs. You can get the 1100 for much the same price and condition.

I bet he’ll like that Enfield

I had a 795cc T100 as my 'first' bike after a 30 year gap from riding. It was a good choice, it wasn't too fast or powerful, and was forgiving of stupid mistakes like changing up instead of down. OTOH it was fun, and it took me nigh on 10 years before I was able to wring it's neck thoroughly. I say this would be a good choice

I have the 1200 Scrambler ( so it is nothing like the Street Scrambler).
It is well put together, the Triumph dealers are generally good ( though the whole lifestyle thing is going a bit Harley at the moment). I don't think the SS will be too much of a handful. The 1200 is very grunty - probably not the same for the 900, but i know it has a fairly soft power delivery

Enfield could be another choice ....

It's a bit of a big lump for a first bike, but he'll get used to it (or utterly hate it)
Personally if I wanted to cruise round at legal speeds I'd buy the lightest bike I could find that had enough power for what I wanted that looked how I wanted.

Something like a street triple or the Ducati would be more pleasurable to ride.

Ducati scrambler would be my choice too, the 800 would be more than quick enough for a first bike and they're a fair bit lighter.

There's also the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, which is a 400cc version with just over 40bhp, they're a good chunk cheaper than the normal Scrambler new. Designed for those on a restricted license.

Depends how old the chap is when he takes his DAS as to what he can actually ride, if he's under 24 then he'll need something A2 legal.

I think the RE will be a better choice really.

Thanks Gents,

It’s much appreciated, you taking the time to reply. I get the feeling he’s already made his mind up and was just looking for someone to say yeah go ahead. 🤣 he said he really liked the Guzzi, but had heard some stories about reliability and he did like the RE too, but thought it was a bit too slow and retro.

Nothing wrong with the Guzzi's reliability, and they're lovely to ride, just a bit slower that the triumph!

If he's worried about reliability tell him to google 'Triumph gearbox failures'..
