What are all these files?
I don't know what these are but there seem to be a LOT on my system (or in the cloud, not sure any more!!)
Can I just delete them? Would be handy to get rid if they don't need to be there?

Re: What are all these files?
So it looks as if it's safe to delete as they aren't 'mine'. But I'd rather ask here incase my understanding of tech stuff isn't correct!!
I found them in 'All Files'
But - having looked closer, there are a bunch from 2021 in a 'downloads' file - called Skiing and with photos of snow and skiers in it as well as a bunch of these java type thingies. Similar in another downloads file, again with photos in it mostly, but then at the 'bottom' of the page a load of these weird files

Could be anything, depends on where they are (ie - what software they're associated with).

Re: What are all these files?
If they're in photos folders, they're likely a list of the photos, and information about each one, in that folder, as used by some editing/managing software.Noggin wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 2:12 pmSo it looks as if it's safe to delete as they aren't 'mine'. Not sure they are connected with software? How would I know?Rockburner wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 2:47 pm Could be anything, depends on where they are (ie - what software they're associated with).
I've only ever used the laptop/apple software and only crop or copy! There are a LOT of these files so I don't understand why they are there reallyRockburner wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 2:48 pmIf they're in photos folders, they're likely a list of the photos, and information about each one, in that folder, as used by some editing/managing software.Noggin wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 2:12 pmSo it looks as if it's safe to delete as they aren't 'mine'. My Mac keeps telling me its full or nearly full. So when looking for something and I see a huge number of files that I haven't created, I kind of want to get rid of them.
I did start a thread on TRC to try and get help to reduce the 'fullness' of the mac but I was in rehab and lacked brain/concentration so didn't follow it up
Maybe I should start one here and try and fix the issue with the laptop that way!

Re: What are all these files?
But if all the files are tiny they'll only be a tiny portion of the disc.

Re: What are all these files?
But why are they there? I didn't create them, so I'm a bit wary that they are causing an issue somehow, if not by size??

Re: What are all these files?
LOL Most of my techie/geeky friends don't use/like them
For me it's been awesome. And to be fair has already lasted a lot longer than any previous non Apple laptop. There is an Apple person out here but he's about an hour away so will have to see if he's free one day when I go to the valley!! Might be able to help sort the niggles!!!

Re: What are all these files?
Temporary measure.
Create an empty folder and dump them inside somewhere on the desktop. Delete folder where they are - taking note of the name in case you need to replace it. Check if your photographs work okay without the files.
Download the reputable CCleaner and let it clean up your Mac. Free version.

Run an anti virus kit such as Sophos - last time I looked it was free for home users.

Be wary of installing browser extensions.

Re: What are all these files?
Note: Java Script (.js) is quite common. It’s used for all manner of things. It’s commonly used in browsers. If you use Safari - among one of many other browsers - you can turn it on and off when viewing websites. Java Script activates lots of images if it is on.
I use Brave browser and turn off Java Script when I view various news web sites. It kills all the ads and speeds up page loading. Turning it off on a Mac also kills the ads on YouTube.
A good idea is to use a browser that cleans up everything when closed - Firefox Focus et al,.
Another tip. Be wary of opening links in Facebook unless you know of their authenticity.
