Personally I think the tank on the Z900RS looks to rounded to work as Z1000J imitation, but I am considering buying a Z900RS, I quite fancy a modern bike, but I want it to look like a bike from the 80s.

Yeah i'm OK with it... perfectly fine looking thing. But i do really like the Z900RS in standard trim, which i think i'm quite an exception in that sense. But as with the XSR900, i don't mind a bit of pseudo retro with a modern twist :)

I prefer the standard Z900RS to the XSR (this hurts as I really like Yamahas) but the standard Z900RS is a little too 1970s for my taste, and I know I'm being fussy, also I'm not sure if I want a bike as big as the Z, but 2nd hand ones are now under £7K so I'm considering getting one.

I like them fine, but I prefer the 'Sugomi' look of the Z1000R,which is why I bought one instead.

I love that 'transformers' look on bikes like mine and the Yam MT01. I'm also aware in certain age group,I may be in the minority.

Got to admit I was quite shocked how small they are in the flesh. I was expecting something Z1 sized mainly cos of the looks, but it's fairly compact.

I didn't mean physically big, I meant big as in powerful, I'd prefer it lighter with less power, more of a GPZ750 than a GPZ1100

Yeah, they are small bikes,to the extent that'd I say anyone around 6ft will make it look like a 125. Kawasaki seem to be messing about with seat heights too,but they achieve this by lowering the suspension, then it's a tradeoff with ground clearance. I don't know if other manufacturers are doing this.

Ah see what you mean. Think they are around 110-115 at the back wheel from what I've read.

No, if I buy one I want to keep it fairly standard, modified bikes are a pain in the arse for day to day use.

I like the paint, the seat and the kerker-esque exhaust.

I'm not sure about the wheels - they look period but presumably are far heavier than the standard RS wheels. Shoulda just painted them gold.

I'd like the tank to be a bit larger and squarer, and the downpipes not to be so curvy.

The seat looks ridiculous. It looked silly on the original as well ;)

Not sure why, but there seems to be quite a few green cafe models for sale in the usual places and they are significantly cheaper than the non-cafe models.
E.g.

Compared to the cheapest non-cafe:
