Obesity - The Gene Factor

Caught The Life Scientific programme this morning and it was quite interesting. I had to smile when he talked about still being hungry after a full meal and relating it to animals in the wild. I am always hungry after a big meal. But how do bears know the skin of a fish is more nutritious for winter storage?

Here's the information:

"Many of us think we’re in control of what we eat and that, coupled with what we do, dictates our shape and size. It’s physics after all - if you eat too much and move too little, you put on weight; do the opposite, and you lose it. Genes, the theory goes, have minimal if any effect on our size.

But what if we’re wrong? What if our genes have a powerful influence over how we put on weight, and why many struggle to lose it?

Over the past two decades, this once controversial idea has gained acceptance and has inspired the work of Giles Yeo. His research on the genetics of obesity at Cambridge University reveals the powerful ways in which our genes, which function within our brains, influence our eating behaviour.

These genes are far better suited to times of food scarcity. Fast forward to the modern diet, packed with sugar and fat, and our genetic make-up quickly becomes a recipe for disaster."

There is well documented information on how we assimilate food has a strong genetic factor.

Some folks have fast metabolisms , some people have slow metabolism, genetics has a factor, life style has a factor, and exercise has a role to play. But if you are fat , then you have taken in more calories than you need over a considerable period of time. How many calories you need to stay a constant weight, and the amount you best mate needs will be different.

We don't photosynthesize - so we aren't gaining calories from anywhere else ...

I've lost 13 pounds in 3 weeks by just having 1 big meal a day.

I chose not to put extra food in my gob. It's not too difficult.

Interesting what he had to say about Labrador dogs especially in relation to Guide Dogs For The Blind - and it's seemingly true.

Food effects different people in different ways, but I've found that eating carbohydrates doesn't stop me feeling hungry, they probably make me hungrier, avoid the carbs and you'll soon loose weight, just how much fillet steak can you eat before feeling full (and constipated)

If it was that easy why did you need to lose 13lbs in the first place?

We don't need Cambridge University, decades of research and Radio Four's top science programme; we've got some chubby lads on here who have all the answers without looking at anything they've said.

I've never been fat, I think my highest ever BMI was about 27 which would make me overweight but not obese. My 34" trousers being snug was the clue I need. I have been on a few diets though, currently doing the post Christmas one now.

THere's a definite genetic (or whatever) element to it IMO, even if I eat what I would consider to be a lot of junk food I don't turn into a proper chubster.

See this is more evidence it ain't as simple as you'd think. The conventional wisdom is that you need to burn an additional 3500 calories to lose a pound, so to lose 13 pounds you'd need a deficit of 45,500...over three weeks that would be 2,160 calories less every day. If you can cut out 2,160 calories a day WTF were you eating before?

Clearly there's more going on I reckon.

Not really. Big gains in the first part of "dieting" come from reduction of carbs... the body stores them with water. ie most of the big losses people see to start with is water loss and water is heavy.

..it's wet too.

For each gram of carbs stored as glycogen - it's held in 3grms of water.

I choose to drink beer and eat shit 11 months of the year. Then a month to drop it off. Suits me ok.
