Buying random land

I have just found out lots of scraps of land near my house are for sale as a parcel, I'm interested because it includes the verge outside my house. There are some odd isolated bits and most of it is council maintained including verges of about 100 houses.
The reserve price is 1.5k so I'm interested even though it's unlikely to be a good financial investment, what I don't know is what unexpected bills I may be letting myself in for. Anyone got any experience with owning scraps of land?

Does the strip of verge include your access?

It can get murky if you don't have the necessary rights.

There goes my evil plot to screw over all my neighbors, I'm quite glad to read that and the result they got as it will put other people off doing the same.

There's a plot of land next to us free. It lets folk walk off the road onto the rough country.

If it's sold, the buyer could build enough to spoil our sea view.
Our neighbour is an estate agent and she knows the owner. If it comes for sale, we have first dibs on it by law.

Big price, but it'll keep our sea view, and when we need the dosh, we can make a few bob.

A strip of land down the side of a potential building plot can be quite a valuable thing, if it there is no way onto the land by going round it. See Ransom strip or bastard strip. I've got one, and if the probate is ever sorted on the rest of the field, I could be laughing

We've got a piece of land at the bottom of our garden approx 50'x10' than we can have for free however it has a bloody big tree with a TPO on it, don't want that burden so have never bothered.
If we could drop the tree we would though.....

SinLaw bought a house with a big tree in the front garden, the tree badly shadowed a neighbour.

House was vacant possession.

When they got the keys and arrived, the tree was gone ....
