Hive mind..... options
Master rdbrgee moved to Italy in September. He went with his partner who is an Italian National, she has residency rights in Italy.
My son doesn't but was/is eligible for residency, up to the new year. His UK passport ran out in Oct. and is sitting in a cue for a renewal. But because of covid they cant expedite it or fast track it in any way so its unlikely to arrive in his hands before the new year. Shit isn't it, as a result he has no way of proving his status as a UK citizen who can move to Italy as part of the EU (pre new year crash-out.) his status to get residency relies on the passport, the Uk consulate cant help unless he needs to get home and they will supply a one time use travel doc to get him home, all for £80, which gets confiscated as you land back in Blighty. Then you have to re-apply for a passport from scratch. The Italian bureaucracy wont accept his UK driving licence as proof of identity. or any other docs he or I have. The consulate suggested offering his proof of renewal application, "document record", in a vane attempt to prove who he is. He can't marry his partner, as that carries no right of residency. So he can only hope that the passport gets to him in time before the end of the year. After which his status gets very much more precarious. His fellow Italian language students have a better right to residency than he does one's from The Sudan, one from Serra Leone and one from Sirrah they of course cant understand why he wants to leave the UK. anyone got a bright idea how he can prove his status without a Passport. or who to approach to get help. NB He's no longer on the electorial register here in the Uk so his (ex) MP's not going to be much help TIA.

It seems a bit daft to have gone, only a few weeks ago without checking things first.
And did he really go with only 1 month left on his passport?

Re: Hive mind..... options
I am passportless at the moment, like your son's it is sitting in a renewal queue in the UK. I renewed my Turkish residency in July then did the online stuff and a friend posted my passport registered delivery in the UK about a week later. It took the passport office another two weeks to acknowledge they had received it.
My passport runs out in June next year and I was only given 9 months residency because of this. I had a holiday booked in Southern Africa for Dec/Jan so renewing the passport was necessary for that as well - 6 months validity is often necessary for entry into a country. The holiday is now cancelled though due to Covid however when my new passport does finally arrive I'll be starting Turkish citizenship procedure.
Timing is everything with this sort of administrative/bureaucratic shit and while I didn't want to lose 10 months of my passport validity renewing it early was the best call.
I have no idea how your lad can prove citizenship rod although I have a notarised translation of my passport if I need to do so (a residency permit is usually enough for ID purposes). Have you got a room available for him?

According to this site you can apply for a passport urgently if you need it to prove your identity:
https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently
Sadly the fast track service is on hold due to "the event" as I have used that and it is very good.

RESULT! Master Rdbgee remembered that he had a photo of his passport when he applied for PRS (Music returns) so that and the application to renew a passport has been accepted by the Mayers office and he's good to get a residency cert. To say we're relieved is an understatement. CArds behind the bar.
