Ktm 790 being dropped 2021

Anyone heard about this. Apparently the 790 is being dropped as not euro 5 and there will be a base 890 instead. Not sure how the base 890 works - guess its the cheaper suspension from the 790, no electronics and maybe a slight power drop, like Triumph?

More money for a bigger hole in the engine?

MAkes sense.... no point having 2 so closely matched.

Suspension, brakes, etc, should take off the required amount.

Sounds like and even looking at ebay, looks like a cracking time to buy a 790.

Makes you wonder why they bothered tooling up... it wasn't as if they didn't know. Regulation (EU) No 168/2013 was issued in January 2013 and established implementation dates for Euro 4 and 5. The 790 only went into production in 2017.

It may have more to do with KTM's plans (I know not whether true or not) to partner with CFMoto and built models with the LC8c motor in China.

Would euro 5 non compliance indicate engine mods required or other stuff. ???

Haven't a few manufactures done this recently ie new model with upped capacity and largely due to emissions? Think Africa Twin did it, V-strom, Tiger 900? etc?

A 790 and an 890 doesn't make sense so maybe 790 was done to get something out in 2017 with a view to always being replaced with an 890 for Euro 5? Most of the bike is the same so just an engine swap for a base model.

Is the 790 ADV being made into an 890 too? I haven't seen anything mentioned about the adventure bike.

Looks like the base model is being replaced too (790 Adv)

As I understand it from a quick read, the 890 is a "cleaner" engine than the 790 and is euro 5 good unlike the 790. So does it simply mean we have bigger cats / exhaust systems or is it clever engine internals. All sounds bollox to me when looking at the BIG picture. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Probably a combination of things...combustion chamber design, fuel injection system, exhaust, cat, inlet, ecu etc. would all have been designed in parallel.

Doing all that is pretty expensive, so they'd only do it once or make engines that are easily scalable.

I think I read that manufacturers make the engine bigger so they can still make the same power but meet the new emissions limits.

That's what I keep seeing, too. But it seems counter-intuitive. Why should a bigger capacity engine be 'cleaner'?

Is it that they can run at a lower, 'easier', state of tune, so using less fuel? Just guessing.

It might just be a coincidence. Its a new engine which is cleaner, the capacity could just be whatever they came up with to meet the performance targets.

I.e. its not bigger to make it cleaner per se, it's new to make it cleaner and it just happens to be bigger.

Could also be that they had to make it bigger to retain performance with extra restriction from different cats etc.

Does make you think this...both efficient modern engines, same fuel, same bang, same gas. Both high revving. It must be from the headers down. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You can change efficency a lot with the details of design though. Combustion chamber shape, cam profiles, infection timing, coolant system design etc.

I know KTM say its 'derived from the 790', and it is, but there's ALOT which goes into making a volume production engine and it could simply be the case they put all their latest eggs in the 890 basket.
