Hi guys. Who knows about lithium batteries? The boy's Daytona has one, and i have read conflicting advice about charging. Can I use a standard Optimate 3, or do I need some specialised charger to keep it topped up over the winter?

I’ve got a noco charger and it has a specific setting for lithium batteries. I don’t have one in the trackbike anymore as it got cooked second time out when the Reg/rec failed. With the k6 750 it’s likely to happen again so there’s no point in frying an £80 battery when I can fry a £40 battery. I’m not that fast that I’m looking for the weight saving a lithium offers

Optimate don't recommend you use the 3 or 4 model chargers for Lithium batteries. You need a lithium specific charger.

I've always wondered why they need special chargers, when a bike own charging system works alright with them?

Both types of battery can take a charge from a bike fine. Normal Battery chargers work on a boost and rest type charge and lithium doesn’t like this, they prefer constant voltage and current which a lithium charger gives

I’ve got a Noco Genius G3500, it does every kind bike battery and has a recovery setting as well. It’s not cheap though about £50. I only bought it because I had the lithium battery in the first place, but it does seem to be well put together.

Battery tender also do some handy bits to go with it - like a USB adaptor that plugs into the permanent charging lead on the bike.
