Brake pads for the cage
Apologies if you think this should be in Shed or Mechanics.
Do any of you more 'progressive' drivers have any brand preference for brake pads in your cars? Looking for replacement for the XF.
Thanks.

Re: Brake pads for the cage
I always fit the cheapest brand I've heard of from Eurocarparts.
Unless you're doing trackdays or you have proper racing style callipers then sporting pads are just a waste of money.

Thanks. Wasnt thinking of sport pads, im mostly a plodder, but was hoping to avoid eating discs if some compounds are more aggressive. Prolly overthinking it

Re: Brake pads for the cage
If you're doing them yourself and don't have to pay for labour, it's a pretty cheap job usually.
I did the front pads and discs on my 330i for under £50 from ECP.

Re: Brake pads for the cage
I think the problem is environmentally friendly brake pads, I have got used to replacing disks with every set of pads. The front of my XF needed doing earlier this year and the rear need doing now but at £500 an end I'm looking for a cheaper way of doing it, I'm tempted to do it myself but with only one car I'm knackered if it goes wrong.

Always used Eicher from ECP. Work fine in our cars, but then we only drive normally...

EBC for me, never been a bother, although I have some Brembo's to fit on my daughter's mini.

Brembo are surprisingly cheap for cars (compared to bikes) and are top quality. Eurocarparts is your friend

Re: Brake pads for the cage
My commute used to involve driving across most of Milton Keynes twice a day, which means doing about 25 "big stops" from 70 into the roadabouts* every day. Therefore I used to munch through brakes pretty quick, probably two sets of pads a year.
I just fit whatever was cheap off ebay. There are some small variations but in day to day road driving it makes little difference IMO. I will however say that the present Eibachs have the strongest smell
*I suppose technically I wasn't forced to be a late braker...

Re: Brake pads for the cage
I was using either Brembo or Pagid from ECP or Ferodo when I could find them for the Discovery (pretty sure they supply OE).
Changed two of the cars using Eicher about a year ago and one pad from each has sheared off from the backing pad so I'm back to Brembo or Pagid.
Had similar with Mintex a few years back - seems to be the pads are more liable to corrode, but then we're in a pretty harsh environment. Probable that people not living on the west coast of Scotland won't have the same issue.
I was once given a set of 'Allied Nippon' pads with a Mondeo I bought.
Scary lack of braking from those so were straight off and in the bin.

Re: Brake pads for the cage
I see a few of you use Pagid. i stopped using them as they give off so much brake dust. Is that not the case with them anymore?

Re: Brake pads for the cage
Since going to brembo on cars I've never gone back, bought a cheaper set of pads from ECP once and replaced them within days, the feel was crap and the fade was awful.. like almost had a nasty one had to use the handbrake awful.

Think I need front pads on my 330i, would you recommend Brembos for it?The Martian wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 12:06 pm Since going to brembo on cars I've never gone back, bought a cheaper set of pads from ECP once and replaced them within days, the feel was crap and the fade was awful.. like almost had a nasty one had to use the handbrake awful.

Re: Brake pads for the cage
When the discs are due, match em up Brembo too, probably half the price of OEM with better performanceslowsider wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 2:52 pmWas hoping you'd be alongThe Martian wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 9:05 am Brembo are surprisingly cheap for cars (compared to bikes) and are top quality.
