Once again the quality of my AEG fridge has screwed the pooch - so I need a new one.

Our fridge has sliding hinges
The only fridges that I can find that will work are fixed hinges. I intend to AO or Currys to fix the new item in place - can a sliding set up be changed to a fixed set up - or is that a "never in a million years"?
There is also a space of about 30 cm above the top of the current fridge - does that make it more complicated ?

Our previous fridge was integrated. It had space top & bottom (with a vent grill in the plinth).

Guessing, since fridges create cool by extracting heat, then emitting it, they need good venting.

In recent heat, out current free-standing fridge freezer is getting hot!

Yup. You need a flow of air over the element at the back otherwise it can't dissipate the heat - it is, after all, a heat pump. If it can't do that it won't cool the inside effectively - or maybe not at all.

Ancient anecdote: Our Physics master posed the Q? You can open an oven door to add heat to a room. Can you cool a room by opening the fridge door?

The point was that the space needs to be maintained. Wasn't that what you asked?
