Qrisk score and statins

Anyone know their Qrisk score? I was told mine yesterday ( it’s the score that offers a probability of you experiencing cardiac failure/attack in next 10 years).

Mine was 27%. Anything over 10% and apparently you are strongly advised on medical intervention ( typically statins).

I’m starting a programme that will help me lose timber and get fitter and they ( GP) will review in 6 months whether I need statins.

I guess I’m curious if anyone else is taking statins and how you’re finding them?

Thanks 🙏

I was told that i needed statins when i was 58 - 8% risk. When i became 60 that risk of a stroke became 12%.
I asked for a GP to phone back a tell me exactly how statins work, and once we had done that , i would consider them.
On the basis that they couldn’t really give me a concise answer i delayed until I was 65. My cholesterol level is 5.6, and using statins took that down to 4. So they do work.
But I just can’t get on with them - muscle fatigue/ cramps/ lethargy etc. So now on benpedoic acid

Losing weight / drinking less / exercise will reduce e the need

Been on statins off and on over last 10, possibly 15, years.

Initial dose caused really bad leg cramps which was diagnosed as muscular which resulted in a load physio sessions which obviously did no good… 48 hours after stopping the statins, the pains went away. A client of mine, a dentist, had the same issues and reduced the dosage to one tablet a week from daily and his cholesterol level was well within the acceptable range which in my mind shows how over-prescribed they can be.

Thankfully, lockdown meant I slipped under the radar for longer than I perhaps should have, which meant when I needed an appointment to have a skin tag removed, I fell back under the GP’s gaze which meant he reviewed the notes from my endocrinologist more closely and saw the elevated cholesterol levels. I’m now on 10mg of Atorvastatin daily which I suffer minor leg cramps from but I’ve forgotten all them by the time I’ve gotten the hound out on his walk.

I’m seeing the GP on Thursday to discuss coming off the anti-depressants and statins, and whether a PSA check is necessary, I stuck a little stick in my shit 15 months ago and it was all clear, but it doesn’t hurt to ask

My SDad suffered horribly on statins (don't know the details but he was quite ill with them) - he came off them, did his own research, changed his diet massively (went totally keto) and no longer ticks the boxes for statins.

I know this isn't everyone but I'm not sure that drugs are always the best option ??

MrsTaff and MiniTaff have inherited a genetic thing that buggers up their cholesterol, they found out when a family member had a heart attack in their really twenties, and then they all got tested.

MiniTaff started on the tablets at 18 YO and has had no side effects,
MrsTaff had a bad reaction to the tablets and was in severe pain, she now self administers an injection every few weeks and has no reaction to that.
Both of their cholesterol levels are improved.

Tried two different ones, couldn't get on with either so just stopped re-ordering them a few months ago.

Thanks, Docca

Now I've got something else to worry about :(

Never heard of Qrisk before, now I'm 18% and may have a heart attack around age 79. If weeksy hasn't killed me off on some stupid mtb descent.

7.9%, according to last year's BUPA test.

You're gonna have to put up with my drivel for some years yet.

My mum was on statins - she had a terrible time with them.

8.4% last November.

First time I have had one of these 'MOTs' at 55, what is the frequency or trigger for these tests?

A few years back one GP put me on statins and a few weeks later another took me off them saying they weren't needed.
I hedge my bets and use Benecol spread instead.

Thanks all

I had a long chat with a cardiologist friend of mine today ( perks of the job 😀)

He said there is enough evidence to suggest that everyone over the age of 40 should be on statins and then proceeded to show me mountains of research. He’s been a heart surgeon for 30 years so this isn’t a vested interest, but it was a good chat.

I feel more reassured. I know losing weight will help.

I’ve already cut out all sweets, sugar, processed food. I’m only left with booze, which I might just drop and getting bummed by Scott Mills. I don’t want to curb all vices!

My mam told me a while back that this is pretty much the policy in South Wales, I can't remember the age that they start but it was more like 60 or maybe even 70.

I wouldn't touch statins id address the reasons why the doc thinks you need them and no offence i dont know you at all, but this is generally because your diet is shite ultra processed food, seed oil, high sugar high carbs and alcohol. Cut all that shit out, only eat single ingredient food lots of animal fat no carbs and lots of fresh meat and green veg and watch the weight just fall off.

Two years ago mine was 0.5% according to the Nuffield MOT I had.
Imagine it's a bit higher now, but not a lot as aside from being two years older, not much has changed.

I also got told my cholesterol is high, but it's the good type that's high, so not to worry about it.
I therefore have continued to eat butter and cheese with gay abandon. Not to mention the excessive alcohol consumption. 👍
