Other than Kindles, what's out there?

I'd like a basic e-reader, no browsing, no lights, no keyboard and if possible I'd like it to have a USB-C charging socket.

Suggestions please.

Kobo. Take your pick of the model. Not locked into Amazon.

Something I could easily google, but what's the process of getting an Amazon/Kindle release onto a Kobo?

Keep a local library on your PC with Calibre. Use that to manage your data.

Hmmm... that sounds like far too much hassle. Also, how do you get a local copy from Amazon in the first place?

If you purchase a Kindle format e-book from Amazon you can (legitimately, I believe) download it to PC using the Kindle app, remove the DRM, convert it to EPUB format and load it to a Kobo.

Interesting. I have to say, I've never seen how you might do that, but never looked I guess.

I dislike any dependence on Amazon (or anyone else really) as much as the next man, but the convenience of pressing one link on my laptop and having the book waiting next to my bed is compelling!

It's really not that complicated. Calibre will synchronise all of your books to/from your library and you're going to plug you thing into a USB socket anyway to charge it. As it's charging, it's also synching. Plus of course there is Goodreads and Library Genesis (libgen) where thousands of titles are freely available to download.

I use Calibre to manage my ebooks. My Kindles are on flight mode as standard.
