I watched that, stupid bugger could have pulled in to lane 1 and made it a total non incident.
The whole program was pretty terrible scare mongering, made me glad I don't have a Triumph any more

Yup, absolutely absurd.

And not a great advert for police Roadcraft training (it also featured a crash involving an advanced instructor. If their summary was correct, he was following too closely, looking for an overtake (others in the group had already passed the car).

When the driver brakes, signalled and turned, he was unable to slow, so went up the offside. Crunch (bike and his pelvis).

What a knobber, so instead of slowing and pulling into lane one in stays on a head on course whilst overtaking the van in lane 1. He should get a slap for that. The oncoming van was the instigator of the whole thing but the copper made it an incident when it didn't need to be.

Reminds me of the youtube vids where bikers traffic light GP into crossing traffic light jumpers to vent their anger rather than letting it all go. Idiots.

Imagine trying to reason with the mindset of that guy. He's a fine example of where intransigence takes you,always dead right.

Might have missjudged the situation, using the lights of incoming vehicles. By the time he realized the mistake it was too late, too much motion already taken.

It's a bit like giving priority to pedestrians at junctions because they are the most venerable. I'd think it's exactly the reason why they shouldn't have priority.

IMO the most scary thing about this incident is that the rider - and presumably the police also - are using this bit of video to slag off the oncoming van driver. The rider comments on the presence of the van and claims that it was in “his” lane; in fact, the road is one of those awkward 3 lane roads where the van driver is perfectly entitled to use the middle lane, and it appears that he was established in it well before the rider committed himself to the o/t.
If it’s hard to distinguish oncoming pairs of headlights in those difficult conditions, how much harder would it be for the other driver to distinguish a bike’s single light? And what’s all the horns about? I think the first is the bike’s , the second the van’s. Both completely useless, but the cop is supposed to work at a higher standard…. What a mess of a “situation”.

That video should have been used to demonstrate what NOT to do on a bike….

OK, some of how it was presented is down to editing. There may be stuff in the build-up that was omitted.

There's so many reasons we know of why he shouldn't have bothered overtaking:

- poor visibility
They'd already covered how conditions were deteriorating.

- risk Vs benefits
He was heading back to the garage, not on a call

- van driver's viewpoint
Guessing, I think the driver will have seen the single headlamp and presumed it was a second car. With all the spray, the yellow bike and jacket, and white helmet would have blended.

... It goes on ...

And then after, blaming the driver was absurd. Rider put himself horribly at risk, then took no attempt to avoid a collision.

But you're right about education. The TV company could have, with the rider, have used honest admission of a mistake and self-reflection and review, and created a positive message.

If the edit is a true reflection of his attitude, he needs a session on the receiving end of the explaining stick.

I hope it cost him plenty in the cake shop to keep the rest of team happy.

Seriously, if he's any representative for his force's training, it needs addressing.

No one learns form a mistake they claim was someone elses fault. As presented that was poor judgment by the rider and should have accepted the error and learned from it.

That was my read of the situation.

The only "Coroners Corridor" I can remember left in the UK is on the A30 somewhere on the North Devon coast, is it still there?

Saw plenty in Turkey and the only reason they "work" is that (on the roads i used) the road is more like 5 lanes wide with a massive hard should where slow moving traffic will move over to when being overtaken (95% of the time..... )

There’s a short section on the A394 between Helston and Falmouth. It’s tempting, but you have to be REALLY careful; I never o/t from the single lane side if there are several vehicles coming the other way, as it’s likely that someone will pop out towards me.

There used to be one just outside Kings Lynn - having grown up there I thought it was normal - We used to call it the Loony Lane.
As a kid you'd stay in the middle lane as long as you could (I know I know...)

Used to be called the suicide lane. Lots of the old A1 in County Durham was 3 lane, many crashes - most serious - ascribed to it. Oh BTW I can't see the video as firefox - quite reasonably stops it. Could we have a direct URL please?
